Soft CRK Sebenza

One way to help minimize burr even at lower grits on the edge pro is to do descending alternate strokes. For example, and pressure is the key, 10-10, 7-7, 4-4, 2-2, 1-1. Again, pressure is the key. If you want to be sure, take a wine cork and draw slice through it 2-3 times to help remove any burr. I've seen zip ties nick and roll edges on other branded knives as well. You've got a lot of lateral pressure/torque happening at a concentrated point when you twist a blade up underneath a zip tie. That's also why they make dikes.

That bevel looks pretty darn wide for 22dps! I run my Lg21, Lg21Ins and Umnum at 17 and none of them has a bevel that wide... and none have any rolling issues. Lots of cardboard... several zip ties... no problem. Something is definitely amiss... I suspect Don M is correct about the wire edge. But I'd also double check your dps angle... your bevel looks much more acute than 22.

If you had a heavy burr during reprofile, then there would be a lot of weakened metal at the very edge. Sharpen it enough to remove the weakened metal (depending on how heavy the burr was during the reprofile) but without forming a burr or as small of a burr as you can get, and you shouldnt have any more problems.

This has gotten me in the past also. Now I use an app on my iPhone to check the angle I am putting on. I will set my phone against the stone to check the actual angle of the bevel on each side of my wicked edge before starting. I was amazed at how far off the difference between what the markings on the rods were and what they actually were.

Great point. Good idea.

Some of those apps are not very accurate (+/- 2 deg) I've found. Highly recommend an angle cube.

Yeah I agree an angle cube is much better but if you don't have one a smart phone will work in a pinch. I think angle cubes are only about $30 if I'm not mistaken.

I use an angle cube with my WE. I also turn around the connectors that hold the rods. This allows you to set about any angle you want because you do not have to use one of the pre-set holes. I tighten the screw with pillars so the angle does not change because of the connector holding the rods moving. Works great for me and very repeatable. I set the edge of my 25 using this method to 17 degrees a side. I have had no issues with edge retention so far.

Ah huh great idea for the wicked edge, I may try that.

I switched to this method a few weeks ago. Worked great for the two knives I have sharpened since then. Give it a try. I think you'll like it.

So the way I avoid a burr is by avoiding forming much of one. This is done by getting my original sharpening completed and then deburring until there is nothing left. Then you can apply micro serrations with just a very few extremely light passes. Strop on linen with black compound just a very few light times. This is why I believe you hear old timers that figured it out stating, "keep em sharp". I always look at the first sharpening as 'shaping' and then the real sharpening comes with the touchups. I have verified these results at up to 100x and I do have pics and videos to back this up if anyone is interested.

IDK what your issue is here, but I hope you figure it out.

Here is a pic of CPM-M4 beater of mine

Pretty low angle hand honed on my Trend stone. This edge took any abuse, a zip tie would not phase it what so ever.

Keep trying and if all else fails, check it out with CRK, because I took my CRK's pretty low as well and never had an issue.

Heck, I have 1095 that is thinner and will cut a zip tie without an issue.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Ok so....After I payed closer attention to the burr and not letting it get to crazy on one side. It seems to be doing better. I also didn't polish it. I only took it to the 1k stone. I also used my chosera stones as oppose to my edge pro stones. I am almost positive that had nothing to do with it. I also used my phone to find the angel and it was 24 degrees. I thought it was about 19 from my original post.
I have cut a good amount of cord back on the wood table. I have been using it just like before and it seems to be doing fine. I also grabbed a zip tie and seem to cut it just fine. I am pretty sure that it was user error at this point. I would like to know why the guy on the video had the same problem...? I am sure he can sharpen way better than I can.
I have not got a reply from CRK to see what they think. I will keep you guys up to date on that.

Didn't watch the video but just because someone can get a knife sharp does not mean they know what they are doing orcan makea true durable edge. Big difference.

24 per side ?
That is a very thick edge if so, and yours looks to be much less than that in your first pic where you said it was 22. I would've guessed it to be around 15 dps in those pics.

Glad to hear you're not having a problem again, and hope it stays that way !

I won't get into your last question much, but I will tell you he was asked(by a SuperMod) to no longer post in this room. I'm not about to put up the link to that thread, or bring up any of the other:p
I wouldn't put much stock into that vid if you.

Yes 24 per side that's what the phone said...
Need a cube I guess.

😳I had no idea about that guy.. I will stay out of all that.
