"I use it on top of 1/8" duro 80A rubber plate. Love it. Can take some serious abuse.

So it is a metal platen, with rubber glued on and then graphite tape glued on on top of that"

Is this what si called a soft platten?
If so where can I buy this sort of setup in whole or part?
If it is not a soft platten what is one, and where can I get one from?

Cheers Ron.

If you're looking for a great "soft" platen, check out Rob Fink's rotary platen. You can find it here under KMG grinder accessories.

I guess gluing a piece of high wear resistant rubber on a platen would work, but I think it would wear quickly and also build a ton of static.

What I am trying to find out is What is a soft platten?
And where I can get parts to make one, and Nathen's link shows one. I was thinking from the above quote it was a sort of soft rubber put on top of a steel platen.
Cheers Ron

After re-reading the original quotes, I guess you could use a rubber piece epoxied to a metal platen as long as you then cover the rubber with graphite. I will tell you, however, that graphite platens don't last long. They will end up grooving where you frequently place pressure, and pretty soon, you loose the ability to achieve anything flat with the platen.

Rob's design is a revolutionary design (pun intended) that allows the platen surface (the rubber belt) to move in sync with the grinding belt. This allows for incredibly smooth grinding with basically no belt bump and much reduced noise. Using three pulleys under the belt, you get a stiff and more flat grind, where if you remove the middle pulley, you get more a convex grind.

Thank you, yes I could not quite imagine a soft platten, and was not thinking of the belt wheel setup. It all makes sence to me thanks for taking the time to explain this. Cheers Ron.
