I don't personally own an Access Card, but a co-worker does and he's very happy with it.

The Spydercard and SOG Access are very different knives, even though they have similar angled sheepsfoot blades.

The Spydercard was built entirely around the credit card profile when closed. The idea is you can carry it in your wallet. It's sort of a cutlery version of those old Transformer robot toys. Closed, it has the exact profile of a credit card. Open, it has a weird profile, just like those toy robots always looked strange because they still had bits of train or plane or whatever they were supposed to turn into.

The Access doesn't try to be a "credit card in disguise", it's a money clip with a blade and can be carried loose in the pocket. This is a lot easier than having to dig out your wallet every time you need a small knife! However, if you want to carry the SOG Access in your wallet, the money clip is removable! The Access handle doesn't stick out at an odd angle and the blade doesn't have a huge angled "hump," either. The Access also has a very neat swing-out tool caddy carrying a functional mini-screwdriver, tweezers, and toothpick. These tools aren't just "gadgets". They're really handy. My co-worker has used the tweezers and mini-screwdriver a couple of times to lever a stiff jumper off a hard drive.

Both knives are what A.G. Russell calls "city knives": knives designed specifically to be used in urban situations without someone needlessly over-reacting. That's why both have "non threatening," completely non-pointed blades less than 3 inches long.

For the SOG card, if you remove the clip, you will need to do something to replace part of the axis mechanism as it will be exposed. The entire knife fits in my wallet pretty nice. It's very very cool.

I've always wanted one (or both) of these. I'm always forgetting everything except my wallet and thought that would be a great way to always have some tool on me.

However, since I go to court regularly (i'm a lawyer) I never have gotten one because they are too easy to forget and leave in the wallet and then when I get wanded, uh, oh! I had an Atwood Prybaby confiscated (I got it back) once when I went to court; they don't mess around.

appreciate the help guys so when in doubt GET BOTH. I like that philosophy.

take care

well i wish i could debate with you on that point, but the only sog i currently own is the sog trident. So comparing a sog trident against a spydercard is like comparing apples to oranges. Btw my spydercard is sharper out of the box than the trident.

Aww, c'mon Sir Galant, that's not really a fair comparison much less true.

SOG makes high-end knives with super fit and finish (Tomcat and the Arcitech), so does Spyderco (Spyker, Kopa Gold Pearl).

SOG makes zytel handled "using" knives (Trident, Flash), so does Spyderco (Endura, Delica).

SOG makes aggressive designs (Pentagon, Daggert), so does Spyderco (Temperance, Kumo).

SOG has a "cheap" line (Fusion), so does Spyderco (Cara cara).

The big difference between the two companies is that Spyderco has better positioned itself in regard to current market demands and the online world. Spyderco pioneered the "fast folder with a clip", they became popular in an incredible way since the 80s and Sal Glesser has done a brilliant job riding the crest of that wave ever since. Other knife companies have made forays into that field but Spyderco, thanks to Mr. Glesser's astute leadership, has stayed on top of it. He maintains an active presence online and customers respond to that as well, while enabling him to personally monitor the pulse of the knife buying market.

Spyderco knives aren't automatically "better" per se, but they're exactly what many knife buyers want these days. While that may be a business concern for Spencer Frazer, it isn't one for me.

SOG offers a very well made production knife that draws faster than any Spyderco folder, including the "waves", with a blade bigger than comparable Spyderco fixed or folding blades, one with a profile optimized for penetration, a choice of both straight and "SpyderEdge", and does it all at a very reasonable price.

...and that's exactly what I want these days. :D

regardless , i still prefer spydies . spydies are superior to sogs in every way possible right down to customer service .

Thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. I have a sog accesscard. It was my first "real" knife. I used it at work, and it was convenient and worked well for what I wanted it to do. I still like it a lot. My next twelve knives were Spyderco folders, one of which was a Spydercard.

Sharpening the Accesscard's AUS6 is nessary on a very often and regular basis. Yes, the Spydercard is AUS6 as well. Let me get to my main point: the credit card knife concept was well done by both companies, but both had their problems. The Spydercard had a weird handle profile, and the Accesscard had an annoying half-clip, which required folding bills into fourths, so that meant a max of 2-3 bills. The steel used for both could have been better, but the takeaway is, credit card knives have tradeoffs because of their form factor. Mcusta has a pretty well designed money clip knife out now (AUS6 or AUS8), but for the price of these, ~$50, or a bit more, get a real folder from either SOG, Spyderco, or whoever else you like (all companies have their respective strengths). These "folder-folders" do the job better, with better ergos, and with even better quality steel.

I have to agree with that statement i will not touch anything from SOG i bought a switch plier years ago thinking it would be a nice light duty daily carrry and the first time i try to use it to hold a stinkin nut the damn thing broke. I have a buddy that had a twitch and he also destroyed it in a short ammount of time. I am a stagehand so i have many such toys but I will never purchase anything with the SOG logo on it as I feel that the quality in comparison to Spyderco would be more accuratly comparing a YUGO (SOG) to a TOYOTA (SPYDERCO). Spyderco isnt the best but its a damn good product the same cannot be said about SOG

OooooooooH! Someone sounds bitter!:o

yeah i kinda am bitter about that stupid tool. Im not an animal with my tools so when they break the first time out of the box I think it reflects on the quality of manufacturing

I've heard of other brands breaking too, I think it just happens sometimes.

Did you contact SOG for a replacement under your warranty ?

It's not good any time, with any brand, but it happens.

it was a while ago and they said theyd fix it but it was gonna cost like 20 bucks each direction in shipping plus parts and i think i only paid something like 60 for it so i didnt wnat to dump more money into that POS so i just junked it i kept the file for sharpening hooks in my tackle box and went back to my gerber multiplier 800 and called it a day LM and Gerber are the only multi tools that ill even touch anymore and the gerbers not soo much i would like to see spyderco come out with a plier based multi tool

Depends on who you ask.
Stuff like that is bound to happen every once in a while.

In my case I've had a Sog Multi-tool for going on 6-7 years. I've EDC'ed it the whole time and it gets used ALOT! Never had a problem. I have been Very Very pleased with it and I'll buy another in a heatbeat.

I also have a Twitch II and a Flash II Alum. handle and am very pleased with both of thoes as well.

Just my .02

As far as the Access card goes I can't comment never handled/used one.:p

You shoulda bought a good SOG from a retailer instead of buying a $60 POS from some dude at the gunshow.........you get what you pay for.

I have a Powerlock and I swear by it. The only complaint is they shouldn't have put the scissors in there.

There is no comparison to the Taiwan counter-part known as GERBER.
