SOG Flash 1: Huge amount of blade play?

I just got a brand new Flash 1. It has an amount of blade play that I would call unacceptable. Even with the pivot screw as tight as I can get it, I get about 1/8" of movement back and fourth (from cutting edge to spine). I understand that some slight play is to be expected, since there are no liners, but the amount on this one is way too much.

So, is this normal for this knife, or did I just get a crappy one?

Pretty typical of the flash series, I have an older model and min has considerable up and down play as well. However the lock has never failed. It's only an annoyance and if you take the knife apart and examine the internals, you would see why blade play is inherent with the lock design.

I see. That bothers the hell out of me, so I guess I will return this one. It's a shame, because it would otherwise fit the bill perfectly for a backup EDC knife.

Same experience here.

The incidences of excessive blade play on some of the SOG folders is very high.
It's almost bewildering why SOG doesn't bother to fix this problem.
None of the higher priced Seki made arc-lock models have this problem though.

Yea - they have some play. Good little knife, but that play issue does not inspire confidence, although it has never let me down.

Yup, I've handled quite a few of the SOG SAT technology folders and most had varying amounts of blade play. Some lots worse than others. Their higher end stuff is better like the Seki folders. If you can exchange it and look at an Ontaria RAT 2 or an Esee Zancudo for similar size and price.

I haven't owned all of the SOG folders (older ones), but I have owned a couple Flash's and they all had blade play (up and down). I was using them as work knives and they quickly dissappeared meaning my helpers took them home and kept them. I've had good luck with the Twitch series. Have owned a couple of them as well as the Blink.
