Sog Flash 2 replacement

I've returned things to amazon, you haft to google for their phone number and call them, then theyll direct to their site and show you how to print out a return shipping label.

Well, considering there are days I pick my Flash 2 over my Para 2, I'd say it's one of the good ones SOG makes. I always recommend being very careful with SOG, as they do have their issues, but some of those issues are a bit exaggerated by the interwubs.

Never been a fan of the SOG Flash 2 and have always attributed its vastly disproportionate popularity to Nutnfancy's highly questionable knife taste.

The Flash 2 always felt terribly plasticish, developed horrendous blade play, lost its edge quickly, and rattled on opening.

I'd take a Spyderco, Benchmade, Kershaw, or CRKT over SOG any day of the week.

It sounds like a Cold Steel American Lawman or AK would fit the bill you're asking for. They don't have as good a pocket clip as the SOG but they're both much thinner behind the edge and will cut better along with having better F&F.

I really like the looks of the ak 47...im just wondering how it compares to the recon 1. I think the ak is an assisted knife which is cool, but if it comes at the price of a rock solid lockup I don't need it

I have a cold steel ak, and I love it. It's lock up is just as solid as my recon 1. It is not an assisted folder, but the thumb plate on it allows it to be waved. I also have a flash and I personally don't like it.

Very similar in construction, etc. Both have the killer Tri-Ad lock. The only real downside for me with the AK-47 is the aluminum pommel thing that just takes up pocket space. I thought about grinding it off. Both knives are beefy enough for just about anything, but still fairly thin and light for EDC. And like Mr. Lazy said, the AK is not assisted.

I like the Flash II's... good knives for what you're paying, IMO.
But to make a suggestion, for strong lock, assisted opening, 3.5" blade, G10 handles, and half serrations, the Benchmade Barrage jumps out... it's got the Axis-Assist mechanism. But it's around $120 most places, I believe...

I agree. I have a Flash 2 and a Mini Trident. Both have minimal play in the blade. For the cost, they're not bad. My Benchmade Barrage is a much better (higher quality) knife. I highly recommend them.

i'd truly love to have a benchmade griptillian...I was on the website playing with the custom maker and had one made up with all white handles and black appointments and blade that looked really cool, but I feel 125 bucks for a knife is too pricey since i'd definitely want to use it. how well do knives that are used maintain their price? and I want to thank all of you for your answers...you've been helpful. most forums I've been on these threads where people actually want to learn or need help get ignored for the argument threads. great community...

If you just use it normally and don't beat it up or abuse it the value shouldn't go down too drastically. Check the bst forums here to see what they're going for used and that will give you an idea of what to expect. If you get into that price range and like the Grip, give a look at the Bone Collector. Similar size and shape but much sturdier feeling. Pretty sure you can find them less than $125 as well.

If I were you I'd see if GPknives still have the M4 Grip.
Edit: just checked. Nope their out. Sorry

CRKT Shenanigan, or ripple. Or if your willing to go $100 a CF blur would work nicely

It looks like you are new to this. It's OK, we all were at one time. Your SOG will come in handy, I would keep it and (use) it. My advice is to save up your cash for better knives for later purchases. There will be times when you are glad you kept the Flash for stuff you don't want to use your more expensive knives for.

Well said. We all started in the "under $50" range, moved to the $50-$100" and from there it's just downhill. If your knife is going to be a true user, save up for a good one. I have tried kershaws, spydercos, and benchmades, but what does it for me in terms of hard use is Emerson. A bit pricey, but a no nonsense design and terrific ergos. It will take anything you throw at it and then some, is easy to sharpen, and is made right here in the US. Whatever you choose, just know, it won't be your last.

You're not going to see any performance difference between a $75 Kershaw and a $200+ emerson. Especially since for that $75, you could get a better steel than you'd get on an emerson, Kershaws especially will probably have better F&F to top it off.

I had a Flash II for awhile but I got a bunch of other knives that I like a lot better so I gave it to my friend. He beats the crap out of it and loves it to death, almost makes me regret letting it go haha. He has cleaned fish with it while backpacking, cut countless boxes up for the dumpster, cut rope, scraped things with it, etc. He only ever sharpens it on coffee mugs and strops it on his jeans. He doesn't seem to be bothered by the blade play and has no interest in nicer knives, so I guess it's worth giving the thing a chance.

it came in the mail today and at least with this one some of the reports I worried about seemed to be blown out of proportion. I'll definitely keep it. Could anybody recommend a good sharpening system? I have a lansky deluxe kit and it'll put a useable edge on it, but won't get it as sharp as it could be. my grandfather sharpens my knives sometimes for me and get them to pop the hair off your arm.
