I am looking at purchasing a SOG Flash II. How does it compare to the other speed assist folders?

forget the SOG, they've some tech. issues (not sure if the newer models still do...)

i once read a magazine-review on it, and it was rated average/poor because of dodgy mechanism, construction and handling/features

i can attest to that, because i fondled two specimens and let me say i wasn't exactly thrilled with it either. felt like a $20 POS knife (sorry SOG.....:( )

read some reviews on AO's, and then get a Kershaw

best of luck in your choice of purchase,

So you feel $35 shipped from Amazon to US addresses is a ripoff?

The assisted knife (in the lower price range) I feel the most solid would be the old Camillus Heat. The new Kershaw Cyclone is pretty solid too, but I wouldn't prefer the aluminum handles or the thicker grind over the Heat.

My Heat has served me well. People with Kershaws seem to be happy too.

I guess it's up to you. Wich one do you prefer?

I had a heat but sold it because it was very stiff to the point where my thumb would hurt trying to open it. I have a dominator which is really smooth but I don't edc it. I want an affordable speed assist knife for edc.

Are the aluminum handle Flash II tantos worth buying?

aahh!, well, what i DO know remember also now that you mention it, is that the alu-versions were better quality than the Zytel-versions, that i know. i'd say try before you buy. they're not as 'intuitive' as a Kershaw for example

PS. @kel_aa , had no idea they only cost $35 ( !). in Europe these things cost more like in the $100-range...... :thumbdn:

I am not familiar with the SOG, but when it comes to assisted openers, I would suggest the Kershaw Ken Onion line. They are my favorite assisteds.

I just recently bought a sog flash II Tanto Alum. handle and I am really pleased with it. For the price I think it is a great knife. Very sharp out of the box.
As for weight I think I'm a little weird, but I like my knives to have some weight to them. It is a little on the heavy side, but I don't mind a bit. :D

I was looking at those SOG AO's as well, I was also suprised at how cheap they feel. I was actually going to get one, but after handling it I went with a Buck Sirus AO, which proved to be a POS knive. I now have a Kershaw Minicyclone, it is my 4th Kershaw (I've had a Chive, Leek and a Boa) and it is very well made and functions like I want (pretty much the same as a full auto). I would go with something from Kershaw, they are getting better and better, nice steel too.

I just recently received my Camillus Sizzle (gift for my dad) yesterday and must say I'm very impressed. Thus far, my AO knives have been Kershaws. Overall F&F I'd say is not quite as good as my Kershaws. And the flipper is sharper (less comfortable) to flick than my Kershaws, but when it opens, it's fast! Solid lockup, very comfortable handle (zytel, very nice), very nice blade, and sharp. My only gripe is that it's pretty thick! But the thickness helps add size when your holding it and feels good. I like it so much that I'm thinking of picking up a Blaze for myself to compliment my Kershaw AOs. Between the Camillus Sizzle/Blaze/Heat line and Kershaws, I'd say Kershaws are nicer overall with better F&F and more attention to detail, but Camillus offers sizes that I just can't find in the Kershaw line.

I've had my SOG Flash II for about a year. I bought it for the name and the fact that it was a different AO knife. (Thinking about getting a collection of AO's from various companies). I'm not too impressed with it. It feels "cheap". I don't care for the button slide to close the blade either. Not easy to close one handed. Don't get me wrong, I think SOG has some really good knives and MT's but this particular model just doesn't do it for me. That's why it sits in box up in the closet. I have a Benchmade Apparition with the "Optimizer" opening system. It's fast and has a solid clack and feel to it. I also have several Kershaw Ken Onion AO's and with my experience, the Speed Assist Opener is my favorite.

So you prefer the thumb opening over the index finger? Mine was managable as long as I pull on the level, not try to push it into the handle.

I understand the international price variations. I'm only pointing out they really are "cheap". With that money, I'd chose a Benchmade any day. But then how much are the Benchmades over there? :)

The graphite anodized aluminum handle versions go for $70-$80 US.

Are the aluminum handle a light gray or dark gray color? I have seen the aluminum handle in both light gray color and dark gray color on the internet.

On the DDR knives (Heat, etc) you're supposed to use the flipper. The only reason the studs are there is because they needed a blade stop
