SOG Flash II vs. other speed assist folders

I have a SOG Flash II and I am not very impressed.
IMO, It's just not as well made as the Camillus Heat or about any Kershaw AO.

Good luck,
Allen

I handled my friends SOG flash, the aluminum handle felt like coke can thin metal. The blade the ones you can find from cheapies you get at walmart for 5 bux. At that time he paid $50, it was cool the AO action but nothign that will blow you away. The knife had hard time to cut the box it came with. I would go for a Kershaw they offer good blades at very reasonable price.

I like the ergos and the flat ground blade. My wife has a couple of Kershaws, but as a lefty they're next to useless to me. I liked the way the Heat fit my hand but I didn't like tip down carry. I like the low riding clip, it doesn't draw any attention in the office. It's robust enough for my uses and it fits my hand. YMMV

I have been reading old posts about the Flash II. The reviews are mixed. Is it just hit or miss? Or do the older Flash IIs have more problems? Or do the zytel handle one have more problems?

I have a Flash II , aluminum handle , TiNi coated blade.
Mine is about two years old, I bought it on sale for $60.00.

Fit & Finish on my Flash II is perfect. The coating is pretty durable and the handle is thick cast aluminum. To me it has the appearance of being an OTF auto even though it's not.

Compared to some other A/O knives it's a little lethargic, but quite capable.

The only issue I ever had was with a very slight amount of blade play after using it for a year. Mr. Roberson ( designer of the SOG Revolver and all around nice guy) kindly instructed me how to fix it. Now I can adjust it whenever needed.

Regarding the ergos , the handle is perfect for me. The locking system is similar to the old Gerber Bolt action knife and the safety is a nice touch but something I don't use unless I leave the knife unattended. The clip can be moved to the other side and it rides low in the pocket.

I read some mixed reviews too , but most regarding the Zytel version.

Here's a pic of my Flash II and Speed/Spec Bump for size comparision.

JPD1998, thanks for the pic. I am going to get the aluminum handle.

Does the tanto version cut as well as the clip point?

I have quite a few of the SOG blades, but not the Flash II. I recently purchased a Twitch II and I'm thinking of getting a Twitch XL. Functions very well and does not feel in the least bit cheap. It seems to function better the more you open it and after a bit of light oil. Every SOG I have purchased has been razor sharp, often sharp enough to shave the hair on our arm.

If I were looking for a larger assisted opener, I would definitely consider the Twitch XL. I believe it has a 3.25" blade.

The clip point is probably better as an "all purpose" blade shape.... I own quite a few Tantos and in my own experience the tantos with a more pronounced front angle ( like on the larger CRKT M16 series) are really more specialized. They can handle most chores like cutting cardboard or dressing game, but the shape is sometimes not practical and cumbersome ( plus two edges to sharpen).

f117a,
Feel free to ignore this, but I was wondering about your handle. I was on that program when it was still black. Are you pilot, engineer, team member, or fan? Had to ask, don't have to know.

knarfeng, im just a fan.

I have read that some of the flash II models have blade play. How do you adjust it? Will an allen wrench work?

It can be adjusted with a Torx Driver, I think #6 bit if my memory is correct. But you need to hold the bolt head on the opposite side with your finger or else it will turn too. It only takes a slight turn or else the blade will bind. In my case it was less the 1/32 of a turn, clockwise I believe... I'm not home so I'm explaining this going from memory.

Thanks JPD1998. How often do you have to make the adjustment?

I've adjusted it twice in two years , I tightened it once and then a few weeks later I backed it off a little, it was binding. Now it's at a point where the wiggle is very slight ( almost none) but it opens freely.

i just ordered the last blue ti bump NGK had. kershaw doesn't list them on their web and nobody else online had any but NGK. anybody know if they are no longer made?
