i'm really getting into this knife thing the last few days, LOL! how hard would it be to take apart a sog flash and smooth out the "action"? i am used to fine tuned semi automatic pistols and the smoothness of the guns action. i was wondering if it would be possible to take the flash apart and "polish" the moving parts so all the moving parts would "glide" and not feel "rough"? also, would it be possible to adjust the spring tension? thanks for all the help:)

Hi Wayne,

The way it works is like this: We can't stop you from doing anything to your knife you wish. But, we can void your warranty or assess charges if you send it in after you've messed something up once you "crack it open." I know that sounds "hard line" ... it's meant to. We'd certainly prefer that you leave it alone. That way, it is left the way we manufacturered it and we can take both credit and liability for it. But once it is tampered with (beyond using, cleaning, oiling, and sharpening...such as disassembly or alteration of parts), that "credit and liability" is passed onto the user.

We’ve designed the Flash with certain “characteristics.” A few customers I spoken with have not understood those “Flash nuances.” The Flash, in comparison to other automatic or assisted opening knives, may not have the overall opening speed of the others, so some users will think something is “wrong,” and want to “tweak” the opening mechanism. The knife was designed very specifically to eliminate handle recoil. We have a very smooth and even power curve that starts very early in the action. So besides pure testosterone, there is no reason for “speed,” because it opens just fast enough. With all of this, check out the handle recoil. It’s GONE! We now have an assisted opening knife that won’t scare the crap out of “sheeple.” It won’t jump out of the hands of the knife-shy and land tip down in someone's toes. We’ve created the perfect assisted opening knife. Without understanding this philosophy, some have thought some oil, or polishing, or grinding, or spring bending, or whatever is required to make their Flash “work correctly.” It works just fine just the way it’s designed ... trust me!

Long answer ... sorry! :)

Here's a SOG knife/Glock handgun/300ZX key trio of mine.

waynejitsu,

I have an idea; If you aren't happy with your Flash the way it is, you CAN send it to me, and I'll give it a good, happy home...Let me know if this is acceptable, and I'll email you my address to send it to.:D.

Actually, it will smooth-out "just enough" with a little normal use.

usually the rubbing parts would smooth out after regular use and make it work "better" than it was brand new. Another example is the Spyderco backlocks... they tend to be stiffer at first but they ease out afterwards.
I think Ron gave a reasonable explanation, and I do notice some kind of recoil on other light assisted folders.

thanks calyth. thats what i was getting at. the roughness, smoothing it out, not speeding it up. i have custom guns, ex. my colt stainless officers model. there was "nothing wrong" with the gun as i purchased it new, but there is ALWAYS improvements you can make to make it perform as you would need it to. ex., the colt trigger was replaced with an adjustable speed trigger, all parts polished for smoothness and pull lightened to about 4-4.5lbs. the trigger is now "perfect" for my use, not that there was anything "wrong" with the factory trigger. another example, my 240 now has aftermarker performance parts on it. anything wrong with the OEM parts? NO! but i do like different options. i guess i will live with the way the flash knives perform and not void the warranty on them. like i said, i like them, as a matter of fact they are some of my favorite, if not my favorite knife. if i didn't like them, i would get rid of them, not ask about improving the function, just like my cars and guns, they were modified because i LIKE them, not because i didn't like them. sorry if i rubbed anyone the wrong way at SOG. :)

NO problem AT-ALL, waynejitsu...And Welcome to BladeForums, AND to the SOG forum!.:). BTW...I'm quite a "tinkerer" myself ;), so I DO know how you feel about wanting to make good products even better...In-fact, I'm not sure that Gaston Glock OR Sam Colt would reconize MY Glock and Colt autos, due to the improvements that I have made to them.:D.

Ron/wayne--i have a Kershaw/Onion Blackout, and i can also vouch for the issue of handle recoil, and it's effect on sheeples(s);) . that sucker opens so fast that i nearly dropped it the first 20 or so times i opened it. it still surprises people any time i open it, but my Commanders/PSARK actually have caused some people standing nearby to jump back. maybe it's the loud snapping sound of the lock kickin' in. but all three knives *always* get a reaction:D . but i really gotta get a couple of the SOG Flashes to pull out around non-knife individuals. sounds like just the ticket for when *out n' about* in public.
thanks for reading this. john

Hi Wayne: No offense here. There's just a zillion SOG fans who want to take their knives apart...and of those who want to take it apart, only 1% or less should have screwdrivers in their hands (from the looks of the knives we received back). ;) I'm just trying to head off with you and the "zillion" others who will read this thread, that disassembly of our knives is not favored by SOG...and why.

Hey John: What you are describing is exactly what we where heading for. Great to hear someone sees our end product.

I should probably say that I'm a "speed/power" freak and would probably want my upcoming aluminum Flash models to have more zip! ;) (I'm just "fessing up.")

well, a long as SOG keeps making them for "lefty's", i will keep buying. that is one of the main reasons i purchased the flash knives- sight unseen! i am just waiting for the T-6 driver to arrive so i can move the clip to "the other side:) i did look at other brands, but nothing fit my requirements, except the SOG...
