SOG folders

The 5" Sog Spec-elites and Pentagon-elites are both very cool folders and a welcome relief from the endless 4" or less folders dominating the market.
I find it strange that Sog is so vehemently accused of copying when in actual fact they've brought out a number of new ideas. As soon as the new Swedges come out I'm snapping up a couple, there's a blade shape you don't see every day.

WOW SOG has replaced CS as the whipping post on this intelligent? forum. You would think that they spit on the pearly gates.:barf:

Lol. I dislike SOG's move with the endura ripoff, though they are by far better than Cold Steel. Would really compare the two. What else has got everybody upset? The build quality of the flash II wasn't good, though I doubt that is an issue across the board. I remember talking about SOG a loooong time ago and how they needed to do something to get themselves back in the game.

Enough about SOG and stealing the thread lol.

Any updates Reaper16?

Yep, first off sorry for spelling the "O" key is gone and hitting the little rubber nub every time is hard.

Ive narrowed it down (mainly due to cost vs chance of getting the flder lost/swiped) to:
1) Kershaw Skyline
2) Benchmade HK30 plain edge (it is my first choice currently)

I have felt the benchmade, and it is pretty darn nice, only issue would be that is a recurve. I have to say the top advice out of this thread was "buy from a refuteable company and you will be happy". I'll probably end up with both...since my family usually spends a weekend in Pigeon forge and Smkey mtn Knifeworks is right on the way.

On the fixed blade note that I mentioned before. Since knifeworks online has the esse/rat Rc5 for less than $150 I cant see how I can not choose it. I see their products recommended over and over. But in the interest of debate, The bench made nimravus is an interesting offering as well. What about the Ka-Bar becker series?

So,

I do believe I have narrowed my choice down to 2 folders.

1) Kershaw Skyline
2) Benchmade HK series liner lock model plain edge (my friend has the serrated and I have to say I love how fluid and easy it is to open this folder).

One last question, is there any reason to not like liner locks?

No reason I can think of why you should not like liner locks. Every company has a different take on it. The absolute most superior liner lock I have seen up until now is on the Spyderco Gayle Bradley (ymmv).

Is this the benchmade you are considering? http://www.benchmade.com/products/14300

Not sure if it was or not. As long as you like the knife I don't see anything wrong with it. The recurve may be a pain, though just make sure you have the right sharpener for it. The skyline looks good too. Cheap, simple, made in the USA, good materials....seems like a good choice to me.

The RC5 is a beast of a knife and will pretty much survive any sort of apocalypse there may be. The becker line of knives are very appealing to me. I like the sizes they come in and the blade grind. The handles you can buy for them are nice too. The Nimravus looks good too. Not my cup of tea, but who knows. In any case, whatever you buy should be good and if not, you can sell it and try something else. Not the end of the world.

I love sog folders, the aegis is awesome. I edc one and have been for over two years. They make some really great knives. The folder pictured above is a blatant copy of the spyderco endura design but that is the only blemish on an otherwise spotless record of great folders and fixed blades. Their customer service is also top notch and their prices are usually reasonable, especially if you shop around.

I have a tomcat 3.0 and find it to be very well made. It's not the lightest knife but it seems quite strong IMO...

I carry aSOG Trident. IMO it's a very nice knife and I have had no issues with it. But then I only use it to cut stuff:D
I also have heir bipolar model and it too is well built

That would be the one.
Can you elaborate on the proper sharpener for a recurve? The only sharpeners I own are a run of the mill whet stone, and another that is in the design of a pen, which has a flat side, with hook sharpener, and the opposite end is a tapered cone.

Effectively you just need something that is curved instead of flat. The sharpmaker rods would do it, though can't say I like them all too much. The whet stone you have may do the trick, though the edge of the stone will be sharpening the blade. I guess the rounded sharpener would be ideal, though may not be necessary.

Alrighty then...

I'm stopping by a knife dealer in Lexington tmrw so if they have either for a reasonable price i'll pick one of them up.

What do you plan on doing with the fixed blade that you want an rc5? Its a tank. Why not look at an rc6? A little longer, with a full flat grind so it will actually slice things. I'm not saying the rc5 isn't an awe inspiring knife, but it is a very well made prybar that can cut things. Very few ESEE knives break so the strength is there in all their knives not just the 5. Of course if you get a 5 you can probably pry a house in half, escape from a helicopter, and tear your way through the side of a destroyer. Which is just cool as hell! :D

I just like to buy once.....and then choose to buy twice
Instead of buy once and BE FORCED to buy again in reference to the fix blade. I'll take a closer look at the RC6.

BTW i picked up a kershaw skyline today, after playing with several kershaw AO's, and a sog twitch xl (i had no idea that thing had pliers and a screwdriver in it???). I have to say while a nice feature, I can open the skyline just as fast, and it has a better blade design imo... for less money.

Btw of all places..my local walmart had the skyline.

You will find that the Lansky Crock Sticks are perfect for re-curves.

I have a nimvarus with 154cm and aluminum handles ... its honestly a beautiful, well made, beast of a knife. It feels amazing in the hand. I honestly can't say enough good things about it. However, I think the RC-series would be a more functional choice if your function is camping/outdoors use.

No...it was something else...no idea WTF model it was..but it was listed as a twitch xl specialty knife...

Also, I can get the Rc6 cheaper so I can't see why not to go with it...also
The nimravus is more expensive than the Esse knives...even though I do like the tanto, I will probably stick with esse.
