SOG Fusion Tomahawk

there is a good thread on the wilderness/survival forum on the vtac by cliff stamp where he has uses for the spike. i also remember reading a review of the rogers ranger spike by brian jones too if you are looking for more opinions
I googled several keywords (the ones in bold in your quote) trying to find both, but failed.

If you or anyone has links to those, I'd love to read them. :o

Thanks.

This was a useful thread for me, I might have considered the Fusion but instead just got a Fort Turner Camp Hawk.

Hope it arrives quickly...

Interesting thread to me, since I have recently bought a Fusion hawk, but haven't had the chance to use it yet. What about the questions others have asked about alternative handles, should we decide to re-handle? Where would you find a fiberglass, Ti, or other, better handle?

This reminds me when I was looking around for a BK1 a few months ago, the guy I called said he didnt have any more, then gave me this great story on a sog fusion jungle machete?? I dont remember which one its called, but I had seen it befor on the net.

He asked if I wanted to order it, I asked what it was made from, after he told me I was like no..... im not ordering that. :D

SOG Tomahawk comes with a Fiberglass handle now, I bought one before seeing this thread (with Fiberglass handle), I have not tested it yet.

MoHead, thanks for posting this.

Now that they've changed the handle, I'm more interested in trying one of these out.

I continue to be impressed with my SOG Seal Pup elite. Maybe this handle change will put the fusion tomahawk up on closer par.

I look forward to reading some reviews.

Glad that info can help you Nematocyst.

I just wanted to add, that one thing I like about the SOG Hawk is the hammer checkering on the sides. I do like the VTAC and plan on getting one down the road, but as a camper/backpacker the SOG Hawk is more suited for my needs. Axe, Spike and hammer all in one.

MoHead, that's precisely my needs, also: camper/backpacker multi-tool, the next step up from my Seal Pup.

I tried a 7" Kabar. Great knife, no doubt - and a keeper -
but for a person who has used hatchets for camp use all my life,
it wasn't sufficient for camp chopping, but too big for utility/kitchen duty.

And for SD (tertiary role), I'd like something a bit ... longer, with more umph.

Looks like this one will fit nicely in/on the backpack.

I'm kind of interested in a SOG hawk. How does the 420 steel hold up compared to some in 1095 and 5150? I'd hate to whack something and find my hawk had some interesting new geometry on the head. I mean, is it too soft?

I just took the Hawk out to play with. I chopped up a 4-5in diameter limb and drove some nails. Chopped great, but all the dirt and some wood shavings got darn near permanently stuck into the coating it got shipped with, the coating is just on the exposed part of the blade, I couldn’t even scratch the stuff off, got it all off though. It drove the nails in really well. After I was done, I cut up some rope, it held its cutting edge fine but I was not cutting a ton of wood.

I would clean off the coating before you used it and oil it your self.

Sorry for the double post, but I thought I would post a picture of the new handle for the SOG Hawk.

Mo, this is some kind of protective coating, or what?

Only on the non-black parts?

How did you get it off?

Did you try solvent?

I am guessing it was a protective coating for shipping/storage. I used solvent mixed with salt to make an abrasive paste and brushed it off. Solvent and brushing didnt work on its own. I am sure there are other ways, it is just what I thought to do at the time.

Forgot..... Yes it was only on the non-black part. Also, I just e-mailed SOG to see the best way to get it off.

RossA:
Will they send out new handles?

Also, I just heard back from SOG about removing the coating on the bare blade. They said sandpaper will get of the clear coating.

Nematocyst:
I see you said you have a SOG Seal Pup, I got the Bead Blasted Gov-Tac and I really like it. I few of my friend have other fix blades made by them and they are all happy.

I called SOG this morning and talked to a nice guy. He said that the new handles were sized a little differently from the old wooden ones, so the head needs a small amount of machining to make the new ones fit. He said to send the hawk, along with $20 to them, and they will put a new handle on it and send it back to me. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Ross
