SOG: Is it worth it?

I have a SOG Tomcat 3.0. A very well built knife. Wish it had a pocket clip though.

Dont want to run SOGs name through the mud, but I bought a Trident black blade which did cutting tasks fairly. However, within the first three weeks I had blade play. The Trident is the only knife in my collection that I despise so I'm going to sell it away soon.

SOG also copy a lot of their designs from other manufacturers. The Arc lock, Sogzilla, and Bluto being a case in point. The knives don't "feel" premium and in my opinion are not well made for the money.

Look elsewhere, SOG isn't worth it.

I have the pentagon folder and the pentagon fixed blade also a flash, I have had them for over five years and they are still in good working order.I don't love them but I don't hate them . just don't pay MSRP and I think you will get your money worth. I do like the VG-10 steel.I still want the bluto but I have not found one in the color I want for a price I would pay.

what was the bluto copied from? maybe I will like the original better.

It's really a knife-to-knife basis. In general, they make good knives, but not at a price-point that keeps them out of Benchmade/Spyderco/etc. territory. If they upped their materials for the price (or lowered the price and kept the same materials), they could be very competitive. It seems like they focus mainly on cheaper products because they're much easier to sell. That makes complete sense to me and I'd probably do the same thing if I had to run the company.

For whatever money you're gonna spend on a SOG, I can tell you a Spyderco that's a better knife.. YMMV, just my opinion.

I am not the biggest fan of SOG because they do not make a lot of knives that really make me want to get them, but for the same price for some of their folders I rather have a Spyderco or even a Cold Steel.

I bought a SOG titanium X-Ray Vision yrs ago. I remember back then, ppl like SOG and I am happy with the Titanium X-Ray Vision.
A little surprised yrs after, most of all respond are on negative side.

Sog sucks just say it blade play junk

So I guess you have a SOG fixed blade with blade play? One SOG knife that I like a fair amount for field use is the Revolver. It feels flimsy, but it is a pretty tough knife. I generally recommend that you buy your SOG folders in person versus buying online, but frankly, the only ones I have had that really sucked due to blade play was the Flash II (bought at Lowe's) which I bought for a work knife. Even had a couple of them.

Seal Pup Elite is a pretty cool little knife.

Other than that, you will probably find some
more desirable offerings if you just spend
some more time reading around here.

The one I have isn't TOO bad, but it has lots of play.
If you DO get one, try to get it cheap.
It would be a good user/beater knife.
I have a Twitch 2.
I give it 5.5/10
Great knife, except for the bladeplay

Three things to look for when you want to buy a SOG folder:
1 Made in Japan
2 VG-10 blade steel -either plain VG10 or San Mai
3 Arc-Lock.
Those are their best folders.
