It seems that SOG had great knives many many years ago, but they did not keep up with new designs and materials !

Why not focus on contemporary knives produced by other companies, Busse, MadDog, Kabar D2, CRK GB Knife and even Cold Steel has updated their knives to take advantage of modern materials and knife design concepts, take the Voyageur series for example.

Comments welcome

Regards,

JB :)

Not kept up? SOG comes out with new products every year and uses some really good steels, AUS8, ATS34 and BG42. I think SOG has kept up pretty good over the years. Here are a few of my favorite new SOGs:

The X-42 Field knife, and Field Pup, The SOG Outline, X-42 AutoClips and the new Flash series.

I do think it would be cool for SOG to venture into other areas of the knife market, but I'm very satisfied with what they have to offer. I like buying directly from SOG cause of the wonderfull people and service.:)

Not to sound too argumentative to Jackboots (even though it does), I'll offer my opinion on "new products."

With a background as a mechanical engineer and shade-tree mechanic, one of the best ways to build a great product to not change the design every year and add new "things."
If one has a design which initially meets most specs, a good designer (and company) will fix those little things that annoy or don't work as well as they should.

In my experience everything is a tradeoff. Changing what seems to be an inconsequential detail sometimes has a huge negative effect on overall performance.

My 2 cents: I'm very partial to leaving well enough alone, which makes me a very very bad customer. That is, I buy one product that works very well and don't upgrade every year just because the "look" changes. I'm function over form.

Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't post this ?? Advocating the purchase of only one product every few years/decades might put SOG out of business.

Cheers,

Carl

Well... Let's start at the beginning, shall we?

What are the great knives you liked from years ago? The Bowie series are classics from years ago, yet two were introduced within the last year.

As was ably pointed out, SOG DOES use the new materials and designs:

Materials:
"New" materials such as BG42 steel in the Recondo, the Field Knife, and the X-42 Autoclip series...

Designs:
The Flash Series, and the Blink are the first knives to use SOG's Patent Pending SAT technology, while a number more feature the patented Arc Lock...

As for your examples, they are all fine knives, no question - however, if I recall, there was some contraversy regarding patent infringement on the CS Ultralock being essentially the same as Benchmade's Axis lock.

Well JB, welcome to the SOG Forum, we invite all polite opinions here!;) even ones we don't necessarily agree with...:D . Healthy, polite debates make life interesting!

Stick around, you never know what you'll learn. The guys here are very knowledgeable.
