SOG Pillar vs Cold Steel SRK

own both....couple versions of the srk. both decent knives. can't go wrong with either really.

SRK design has been around a long time and is well proven .

I'm not a SOG person so won't comment on that, but the SRK is just a classic, well designed, good sized, comfortable to use knife. So unless GSM has caused whoever is actually making the 3V version of the SRK to poop the bed, it'll be a classic, well designed, good sized, comfortable to use knife.

The not-kydex sheaths I'm not overly fond of, so I just make my own.

I have no specific issues with the LT owned CS, or the knives they produced. My issue today is more with the company (GSM) that is trying to run it now. And failing.

SOG on the other hand, sucked even before GSM. :p :p

(Relax Heffeb, I'll send you some new panties.)

So far , I believe most of the classic old Cold Steel models are still OK . Except where they've downgraded the steel to 4034 or 4116 , or similar .

Taiwan stuff especially, should still be good .

Just be careful with the new outfit GSM , they don't much seem to care much about their customers or the Cold Steel legacy .:thumbsdown:

I have two Italian 3V SRK’s. They work fine. That said, I have a SOG SEAL 2000 from the 1990’s which is fine too. Point being, buy what you like, as long as you like it. Personally, I’m not buying anything new from either right now, which is fine too. YMMV

I have hundreds of knives, and therefore no one "knife of choice". I criticize certain manufacturers when I have valid reasons to do so. Don't get your panties in a bunch.

I have been on this forum for over 20 years...I'm pretty sure I have posted about one or two of the knives I own.
Okay, buddy... No worries! :)

Both good knives from reviews/opinions etc.. particularly the SRK. I don't own the SOG but it really appeals to me aesthetically.

Never been a SOG fan, been disappointed too many times.

And now that GSM is (barely) running Cold Steel as well, I have no use for them either.

Lose/lose.
I bought a few srks after GSM and they and for 60 dollars the srk is pretty good it takes any abuse and keeps going, and is my dressing knife for hunting. It can dress 5 Maybe up to 6 without re sharpining not saying they are the best (but good for price) but definitely still good knives and worth using.

I was looking at these two recently as well and opted for the less expensive SRK in 3v over the SOG in s35 for a largish knife that may see abuse.

I also own both. I personally prefer the sog. It feels better in hand, I like the grip material better, I like the overall size better, I like the sheath better and it seems to be a little higher quality overall. I paid about the same for each because I got the sog on sale for a really good price.View attachment 2268794View attachment 2268795

Only Cold Steel fixed blade I currently own is AK47 field knife - CPM-3V steel, made in Italy and it has the old logo (pre-GSM). It's a good knife, but I had to get another sheath for it because their Securex was dulling it. Almost every cold steel fixed blade will need a new sheath

I have new logo Recon1 folder, and I'm happy with it. And with that, I'm pretty much done with buying Cold Steel.

If I was to buy another fixed blade, I'd go for ESEE, Terava, Fox, Lionsteel or Manly.
SOG would not be my choice.

Can’t comment on the SOG, but what I do like about the SRK is the value. The SK5 steel does cutty cutty stabby stabby knifey things just fine. Me happy.

I don’t think GSM has ‘ruined’ the old Cold Steel designs just yet. If it was made in the Thompson/Demko/Wallace era, it should still be a solid knife.

I would look towards other brands now that GSM owns both companies. However, if forced to choice I would take the cold steel over the SOG anyday.
