Does anyone have any experience or comments on these knives for "survival" or emergencies! The seem pretty sturdy to me.

They're a decent knife for the price and you're right, they're quite sturdy.

Hey Guys...

rf..

Good knives for general field use,, however I wouldn't consider them "survival knives" at all.. A little too thin for my taste..

Any heavy use and the tips are snap'n...

I have all three Seal 2000, Seal Pup and Field Pup.. All good knives for general duty,,but not for anything you want to be beating on...

I have a SOG SEAL 2000, and I have used it with a baton on numerous occasions to split wood. The SEAL 2000 is more of a general purpose tactical field knife, I think. It has fighter characteristics, but the design also lends itself just as well to general field use. It is realatively sturdy, but the narrow blade, sabre-type grind, and serrations make is a less than ideal woods knife for me.

I do like the knife. I've had it for about 9 years now. When I first obtained it, I used it a lot on camping trips. However, it didn't take me long to replace it with blades that were more suited for my activities.

Ididn't care much for the "pup", had two. It always was too small for me in the field. I use a 2000 diving and snorkeling and does a good job for me. It is surprising pretty rust resistent in the salt water.:)

I have used the sealpup for camping and hiking for about 2 years. Yeah it's not the greatest knife for woodcraft but you will get used to it. Sharpening it is easy and the serrations sometimes come in handy.( Well for what I use it for.) I have used it for batoning wood(smaller peices), food prep, camp chores, and etc.. For smaller projects, I still use my SAK or LM wave for them. For bigger projects I still carry a Friskars hatchet, its light and it takes a beating. It can all be done with the sealpup. You have to get used to it and know it limitations. (this goes for any knife IMO)
Naturally you will have others to pick from in your collection, so you will have a broader selection for each trip.

The Field pup is a nice field/hunting knife. It was designed for food prep, wood working and general camp cutting chores. I've owned one and one of these days plan to get another one. I currently own the SOG X-42 Field knife in BG-42 and rather like it. Most of my hunting knives are carbon steel but I love to have a few stainless hunters around for use close to water or for loaning on campouts for food prep.

I have a SOG tech I which pretty much is the 5" version of the Seal 2000. Same blade shape just shorter and it has a Bras guard. So fancier and shorter. I've never worried about prying with it or doing light chopping and splitting. I do prefer a full or 3/4 flat ground blade, but it does do the job. More of a combat knife or dive knife then a camp knife. The seal 2000 would probably do better. Can't say cause I don't have one..... yet. I think of the Seal Series as more of modern stainless versions of the venerable Ka-bar.
