Hey, I have been doing some research on getting a decent beater knife, and I was wondering what kind of abuse the people of BladeForums have put the Sog Seal Pup through. Also if anyone has one they would consider selling please message me.

I have the Seal Pup Elite which I got when it came out a number of years ago. It was my standard woods knife for a while until I moved up the ladder a bit from my point of view. I have no problems with the Seal Pup. Easy to sharpen and holds an edge sufficiently.

I do not abuse my knives, but I suspect it would stand up to a reasonable amount of "abuse". It you are going to use it hard, I would get the Elite version as it has slightly thicker steel and likely stronger.

If shelter building and abuse is in the cards, why not something a lot bigger, like the SOG Super Bowie?

That pointed swedge on top is not going to be friendly to a baton.

I would not use a seal pup for batoning. I have one and while its a nice smaller fixed blade for what I use it for (nothing, lol) its very light and like another said that pointed thin swedge is not going to lend itself well to your needs. Great looking knife but If you want something cheaper that would work better I would look at a becker or even one of the newer schrade fixed blades.

A member here, Craytab, has put the SOG knives through some good use maybe he will chime in. The SEAL series are generally considered to be tough knives, maybe priced a little high for AUS8, who knows. I have the Pup Elite but have never beat on it, I like it.

Lotta guys I know took the regular Seal Pup to iraq and Afghanistan and beat the hell out of it and brought it home, I bought my wife one and it's a fantastic knife for the money..
I actually handed them out as gifts like 3 or 4 Christmas's ago to family. I bought a bunch of em in bulk and paid like $28 each for the AUS8 ones and was very happy, the Elite is even better of a knife..

Though I wish I'd didn't have serrations, I do love mine for edc.
I haven't beat on it because I have a hatchet, but I'd imagine it could take pretty well.

Outdoor guy here......handled many knives in both military and civilian settings. I have a Sog Seal Pup on order.....seems like a great blade........more to tell.

I would just suggest you carry a folding saw along with the Seal Pup Elite. You have the shelter building aspect covered. Big knives are fun however, but I tend not to want to carry them often unless I know I have a need. Becker BK-7 would be something bigger and still carryable, but the BK-9 would be a better chopper.

I EDC a Seal Pup Elite regularly. I've owned most of the SOG Seki and Taiwanese knives. I'm not sure I would baton with this knife on the regular but I think it could handle a but of hard use. I also would avoid digging with it! That said.....I own its bigger brother and have beat the crap out of it. You can find both the Pup and the larger version on the exchange at a great price if you are patient. In the price range these things end up at on the secondary market you can get a great knife for a good price. If you can up the budget a bit the Esee 6 is a great option as well.

I have one and think it's a great blade. Ergos on the handle make the distance from the handle to the working edge a little far for my liking. I've beat the hell out of it, and it performs well. Takes a great edge too.
