SOG Seal Pup

That and you have about 14 gazillion fixed blades so there...:p

Oh, Jesus, tell me about it. . . .

I've got $1,000 worth of wood sitting here just waiting to become knife handles. This is about one-third of them.

ESEE is great, but they are not a fit for everyone. I have owned the izula, 3, 4, and 6. I have none of them now. I think unless you have very thin fingers the handles will be too small. The handle on the 6 was quite nice, but otherwise their knives have terrible ergonomics for me. YMMV
On the other hand the Seal Pup feels great.

Really though, look into Mora knives. They are awesome for the things you want to do.

One thing your going to want to keep in mind when reading here is the existing fan bases of other manufactures. I'm not going to say any of the knives listed aren't great, because they are, but you will get bias recommendations considering the sheer size of ESEE, or Becker fan bases here VS Sog's

If you actually held the seal pup and liked it, choose that one, I agree its not the BEST choice but it will do and its inexpensive. Sogs name was dragged through the dirt recently which might explain some of the negative comments but has nothing to do with their quality. I don't think ESEE is the BEST choice either but its surely an ok one. Honestly I'm not sure I even believe in a best choice.

Another good choice would be to look at Ontario's lineup there pretty damn cheep. If you can get over the way it looks Mora knives are pretty well made, with rock bottom prices.

You got a hard decision ahead of you :D

BEST choice . . . well, I'd have to steer him towards a Randall for that. But the guy's on a budget. Sheesh.

Yeah, that doesn't even include the two more pieces of ebony, the Burmese rosewood burl, and the curly koa I just picked up.

That would look awesome on a number of fixed blades I can think of right about now... Including, but not exclusively limited to a Spyderco Mule in CPM-M4.

Well, I have both.
the Seal Pup and the Esee 4.
For me the SOG ist the better knife.
The handle of the ESEE 4 just doesn' t fit my hand. Further, given its blade size, I feel it's by far too heavy. This is because of the massive full tang construction.
Serrations? I don't care, how much bushcraft do you actually do anyway?
For some things the are even an advantage.

Like many said before, take a look at a Mora. Not that robust knife, nonetheless very solid, cuts pretty well and has a great feeling in the hand.
I have a Seal Pup and I like it. Very easy and light to handle, its ergonomics fits me. I'm not a hunter, I can't tell you how's that knife for hunting, but for camping I like it a lot. There are thicker knives, hence stronger, but they don't come too handy for slicing food for example. Personally I don't like carbon steel, I'm too lazy to maintain it (on land: stainless steel, on sea: titanium). If you liked to handle the Seal Pup give it a try.

OH don't worry when I get out of school I plan to lay down for a Randall, but 90% of my funds go to partying, gas, and Firearms related things.

Also Small handle knives don't treat me well...I've discovered this before. I think I will look into Buck more, and I hate serrated edges, but I found a SOG on amazon that was plain edge for CHEAP.

Also, its stupid but yes the look of the MORA detracts me.

I've got a Seal Pup Elite and think the knife is very nice. It's the serrated version which I don't care for thought. The plain edge would be a good outdoors knife and will do anything that can be done by a knife with a 5" blade. I love the handle on it, it fits my hand very well and feels good to me. I'm probably going to get a plain edge version sometime in the future.

The SOG Northwest Ranger it their ultimate outdoors blade, IMO.

The ESEE/RAT knives appeal to me because they are plain carbon blades, but they don't feel good in the hand to me. I know they have a bullet-proof warranty, but I think they are over-priced for a factory 1095 steel blade. JMHO.

...the look of the MORA detracts me.

If you have handled it and like it, Idon't see what all the debate is about. I had one and it was good, but then i got a fallkniven a1 and didn't really need it anymore. It will serve you well, just consider the fact that you could always save a little more for a fallkniven f1.
