SOG Seal reprofile?

Hi All,

purchased a sharpmaker recently and have had good luck with it on my endura and a schrade, but need advice on my SOG Seal.

It never was very sharp and so I decided to give it a go on the sharpmaker and see what I could do. I've read that AUS6 can get pretty sharp, but mine seems to need a reprofiling.

I've been using the coarse rods for a while, probably 300-400 strokes per side at this point. The rods have been cleaned a few times during the process. I also used a sharpie to measure the progress.

Anyway, it still is not what I would consider very sharp (I can get it to scrape off my arm hair if I use enough pressure).

I considered buying the diamond rods, but they are quite expensive. Any thoughts of whether or not the grey rods will eventually produce a good edge?

I am using the 40 degree setting at this point.

Thanks,

Howdy...I thought I had the same problems. Worked the 40 degree medium rods for quite some time, then went to the fine rods.

Went back and re-examined the whole situation. Worked the grey ceramics about 60 strokes each side. Then switched to the 35 degree back bevel, and hit each side about 20 to 30 times on the edge, and than switched to the flats. Finished it off with the fine ceramics at the same 35 degree angle, and it was extremely sharp. Popping hair sharp.

I just think the factory angle on the Seal works better at the 35 degree angle than the 40...My 2 cents worth......

Thanks for the reply.

Mine has a 30 degree backbevel...

I will give it a shot.

Thanks,

Coop

Ok, tried to resharpen as described but still feel that there needs to be more reprofiling. Would you recommend a more aggressive cutter like the diamond rods?

A couple of things. The Sharpie method is great and works, but I've found the ink disappears before you've actually hit the edge. When it disappears, apply it again and you may find that you're not really at the edge yet. Really, the only way to know for certain that you're honing on the very edge is when you get a burr.

I've used the Sharpmaker for reprofiling with the dark rods, and it takes forever. They are 600 grit, and far from ideal for reprofiling. Do yourself a huge favor and sink $20-30 into an extra course diamond benchstone. What would take hours on the Sharpmaker will take minutes with the diamond hone.

I have the Spyderco diamond rods. They are okay, but on my Sharpmaker, they must seat at a different angle than the other rods, because I can reprofile with them but then still not hit the edge with the other rods. Plus they're expensive. In addition, they seem to be about 320-400 grit. An extra course diamond benchstone at 220 grit will cut faster.

Good luck!

I have a DMT extra-course and it's served me well. I don't have much experience with other brands of diamond hones.
