Which one will be more durable? Sog seal team vs cold steel recon tanto? Does the GRN handle on the sog split open?

The SOG SEAL Team is AUS8, the Recon Tanto could be one of several steels. I personally think the GRN handle will be more durable than the Kraton, though less comfortable.
Probably in terms of pure strength, I would back the Recon Tanto, but have a look at Mayor Fuglycool's destruction test of the SEAL TEAM on YouTube - you will be impressed by what it can handle and shrug off in terms of abuse.

I have seen 2 CS handles come loose. The SOG has been driven over by trucks with no damage.

Both blades are in the same vein, but I'd think of the SEAL Team as being sharper and bulkier to carry where as
the Recon Tanto will be more compact to carry and more durable in use, especially concerning tip strength.
Both really are great blades, and I think you should eventually get both if you like modern, tactical, fixed blades.

Literally just go with your knee-jerk reaction as to which one to get first and get the other later.
Or, toss a coin and whichever one you find yourself hoping for while the coin is in the air, is the one you get.
Neither one is "better" and they should both be plenty durable. Just different shapes for different tasks.

I've beat the snot out of both CS and SOG fixed blades with the types of handles we're talking about and haven't had an issue from either one.

Does the GRN handle on the sog split open?
Mine hasn't after nearly 10 years of hard use.

Has SOG ever done the Seal team in a full plain edge without the partial serrations ?

No. The Seal Team Elite (Aus8/Taiwan) as well it's original predecessor Seal 2000 (Aus6/Seki Japan) were always made with the partial serrations. The only straight edge version in the series is the Aus8 Seal Pup Elite.

I have Recon Tanto for a while now. No issues despite withstanding lots of abuse.

I would give the edge to SK-5 over AUS-8 regarding the steel.

What is the basis for this view? One of course is a carbon steel and the other stainless, but both SK5 and Aus8 have proven to be very tough steels satisfactory for mid-large fixed blades over the last 40 years. I don't see any basis to rank one over the other in this regard. Aus8 has never earned any reputation for being too brittle or chipping, even with large choppers.
As far as "abuse" is concerned, I presume you've seen the famous Aus8 SRK destruction test video?

He's a huge fan of the sk5 recon tanto from CS. Never seen him post about experience with aus8 or sog. I wouldn't put too much effort in addressing this, Ken.

I've had sk5 and aus8 from sog, with a lot more experience in the latter. The aus8 I've had from sog has been very good. No complaints for what it is and sog seems to have the ht with cryo down. Haven't had any from recent runs so who knows if things have slipped.

well ones a fixed blade with no moving parts and ones a folding knife, now granted the recon 1 is an amazing knife, lots of videos on YT of people beating them to shit while still holding up their end of the bargain,
however this knife (sog) is a beast and now comes in TiNi coating (titanium nitrate?) don't quote me on that part, so to answer your question, apples and oranges, get both, they will pair really well together

Not saying AUS is bad, I'm just saying personal preference for ease of sharpening, I tend to struggle with burr that forms on stainless while for some reason I didn't experience same thing with carbon steel. That's just me tho.

Regarding the video, I did watch it and I honestly have no idea what steel is used there, Carbon V, AUS 8 or even 3V, I got no idea. I also see lots of people in comments speculating about steel choice.

Well you got that part right :D
I honestly wonder how much abuse will it take before it fails. And I keep the Warcraft Tanto ready to replace this one after that happens :D

If you want a SOG without serrations, you could look around for an old SOG TECH series.

Here my Vintage TECH next to a CS Recon Tanto (CarbonV).
Note that the TECH has a rubber/Kraton-esque handle with some give to it like the Recon Tanto.
Though both knives are old, the handles have held up fine.

I like my CS "G.I. Tanto". So far, anyway, it has done everything I needed it for. (No taking out enemy sentries though. I haven't had need of performing that task yet. However, it would probably work o.k. for that.)

I think you may be confusing the Recon 1 with the Recon Tanto . The Recon Tanto is a 7" fixed blade, it's come in a multitude of steels.
TiNi is titanium nitride, a ceramic coating. It's very durable, far more so than either powder coating or 'Tuffex'.
