Mine hasn't after nearly 10 years of hard use.Does the GRN handle on the sog split open?
Has SOG ever done the Seal team in a full plain edge without the partial serrations ?
I have Recon Tanto for a while now. No issues despite withstanding lots of abuse.
I would give the edge to SK-5 over AUS-8 regarding the steel.
He's a huge fan of the sk5 recon tanto from CS. Never seen him post about experience with aus8 or sog. I wouldn't put too much effort in addressing this, Ken.What is the basis for this view? One of course is a carbon steel and the other stainless, but both SK5 and Aus8 have proven to be very tough steels satisfactory for mid-large fixed blades over the last 40 years. I don't see any basis to rank one over the other in this regard. Aus8 has never earned any reputation for being too brittle or chipping, even with large choppers.
As far as "abuse" is concerned, I presume you've seen the famous Aus8 SRK destruction test video?
Not saying AUS is bad, I'm just saying personal preference for ease of sharpening, I tend to struggle with burr that forms on stainless while for some reason I didn't experience same thing with carbon steel. That's just me tho. What is the basis for this view? Well you got that part rightHe's a huge fan of the sk5 recon tanto from CS.
If you want a SOG without serrations, you could look around for an old SOG TECH series.Has SOG ever done the Seal team in a full plain edge without the partial serrations ?
I think you may be confusing the Recon 1 with the Recon Tanto . The Recon Tanto is a 7" fixed blade, it's come in a multitude of steels.well ones a fixed blade with no moving parts and ones a folding knife, now granted the recon 1 is an amazing knife, lots of videos on YT of people beating them to shit while still holding up their end of the bargain,
however this knife (sog) is a beast and now comes in TiNi coating (titanium nitrate?) don't quote me on that part, so to answer your question, apples and oranges, get both, they will pair really well together

TiNi is titanium nitride, a ceramic coating. It's very durable, far more so than either powder coating or 'Tuffex'.
Easy mistake to make, the names are quite closeit appears i misread it, my bad
