SOG Trident Question

I love the tridents all of them I just wish they were a little larger..I got big mits.and yes I would and will buy my tridents over

how many do you have snake, and for how long have you had them and how much action have they seen?

I'm getting the TF-11 which is the tanto version -- conintuing in line with the tanto assisted opener EDC, my current being the Kershaw Ken Onion Tactical Blur. So the AO action is slower than Kershaws'?How much slower we talking here, Nano or Miliseconds?

This is the one I have. Very cool knife:) I would say that the AO is indeed slower than Kershaw's. I couldn't tell you by how much, really. I know my Shallot is faster and my Needs Work is greased lightening. The SOG does have good lock up even if the speed is not that great. I also think that some of the perceived speed is indeed in the amount of "kick" than an AO gives when it engages. Sure, a lighter/shorter blade is going it move faster, however I think that it is the "snap" of the blade as it locks open that people notice most.

The SOG having a zytel handle with no liners is not going to give that "thwack" sound that you get from the thumb studs hitting the steel liners of other brands;)

You guys wouldnt mind posting pics of your knives, would ya? I'd love plenty of nice shots form many angles and close ups, if you dont mind :-D.

I love my Trident, but absolutely hated the "shark fin" on the back of the blade. 45 minutes with a medium grit diamond stone solved that:D.

If I can ever figure out how to take a decent close range pic, I'll post one...

i bought a tf-11 for my brother and thought it was pretty decent, i had a SOG Flash 2 and loved it, so i got him the trident. It has the TI-NI coating on it with the tanto and has held a wicked edge, they make decent knives, whoever said they were overpriced wasn't looking on ebay, you can get them new for really cheap. Also, the spring assist was pretty decent, the larger the blade the longer it takes to come out, thats all.

Iv'e had mine since they came out. I shaved down the little annoying nub on the spine as well. I softend the handle texture with sand paper. The cord cutter worked for small line but not great for paracord, so i took a chain saw fill and lessend the angle of the groove. the clipe was in the way also as you pulled hard to cut the cord so i had to notch it .

Dont know if the newer models have improved on the groove cutters.

i have a SOG trident tanto and i have never had a problem with the cutter catching on anything. if anything, the knife is just a little big for my pocket.

Thanks guys, keep em coming! I'd love some pics if anyone has them or is willing to make them just for this thread!

The AO is not so much slower that it affects performance very much, but it is noticeable when compared side by side with a kershaw. I'd say that its a fraction of a second slower, but keep in mind that the trident was in storage for months, so the spring might have weakened somewhat.

The Trident's speed/action is very different from Kershaw. It is actually designed to stay closed when safety is off. When using the line cutter the blade can be pushed flush to end of slot without knife opening. This means the blade will not open accidentally when using the linecutter slot. This is in line with its intended operating environment (jump/boat). It should not open accidentally even during extreme activities or if slot catches in your pocket.

The blade presents considerable initial resistance to opening but once past the camming point the Spring Assists switches from "keep blade closed" to "open blade" action and you will find that even if you try to open it slowly, the blade gets to a certain point then the SA cams over to fully open and lock the blade. I've tried opening this knife both fast and slow but cannot get my thumb to follow the blade all the way open - this is a nice touch as the blade flashing past the thumb allows it to safely locate onto the handle - unlike some other thumb openers that tend to nick unless opened carefully.

IMO this knife was designed with a Special Operating Environment in mind and not as an EDC. AUS8 is not my favourite steel either but it is a reasonable compromise. Fit and finish may not be on a par with similarly priced knives but a blade lock rated at 1000 lbs kinda makes up for this and I can't see any problems with this knife when used for its intended purposes.
