Newbie here that would appreciate some views and hopefully positive comments on the Sog Trident Tanto. Purchased mine recently for $59 which I thought was a decent price and so far love the knife with it's quick spring assist blade. I know they are AUS-8 steel but am hoping the lock-up is a strong one. I believed this knife would be great if needed for defense as well as being a clip pocket folder. Would appreciate any feedback from members who own this knife and are overall satisfied with the construction. Thanks in advance.

Mine stays in the truck. I think that you got a good deal there, particularly if it was the larger one. There are actually two sizes. I have the larger and paid more than that for mine.

I really like the Trident Tanto. Not too bulky, so it carries nice when I have carried it. Sit's as deep in the pocket as any folder I've seen, although not as discrete as it might be since the SOG logo is boldly cut into the pocket clip. Very satisfied with the construction. Very easy to deploy and opens with authority. I have had it since 2008 and it's still tight. I keep it in the truck because of the integrated cord/belt cutter. Great original and unique design feature. As you have no doubt noticed, it has very aggressive jimping on the spine just ahead of the handle one could possibly use as a small file to cut a grove in wood. That jimping in conjunction with the arc lock and the large handle, make this folder capable of being used with gloves. Something to consider when comparing to other folders. The arc lock is the one thing in this knife that does not inspire confidence from it's feel. SOG touts it as making the knife virtually a fixed blade. Whatever that means. It has a loose light plastic feel that may be just fine, but it doesn't have that solid feel to the control lever like the safety does.

All told I like the knife. Not the best buy I've made in folders, but it does have unique features I was willing to pay for. YMMV. Would have felt better if I had caught it on sale. The blade is on the narrow side, but that keeps the weight down (4.5oz) making it very interesting when compared to others of the same weight.
The Ontario Model 1 A for instance, has a blade 1/4 " shorter, but is 5.1oz. Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service adds to the value as well.

I hope you and the Trident come to be good friends.

Thanks for reply and comments concerning your opinions. Jumped in with both feet on this one when I saw that tanto blade and how fast it zips open. Only recently got to thinking about the strength of the lock-up. Got mine at a Dick's a while back and was impressed with the price seeing Sog advertised them on their site for $30 more. I got the larger one with the decent blade length. Sure looks more like a tactical defense knife to me. Heard that AUS-8 is not the most premium but holds an edge and sharpens more easily than some other steels.

Steel seems to work fine for me. I bought mine at Dick's as well for what it's worth. I'm a big fan of tanto blades, especially in an edc. The flat angle tip works great for scraping which is something I seem to do more often than I realized.

If you like tanto assisted folders, check out the Kershaw Tanto Blur. Rock solid feel that defies it's weight of only 3.9oz! While both tanto, they are very contrasting blades.

are my three assisted folders I like to keep handy. Between the three, they cover all the bases for my desires.
