I believe this was made of 440A. How does it compare to ATS 34 for hardness, rust resistance and edge holding. Will it handle field dressing deer or should I use something else like a Buck Vanguard. Appreciate some help. Need to decide before friday, thanks, TED

It may not have the hardness of 440c or ats.
IT will do a deer most likley but will require a touch up after that ..

It would certianly be better than a knife of ats34 for long term hunting, if you don't mind resharpening frequently. Ats-34 steel is classified as stainless(>19% Cr, I think) but it still rusts rather easily. Also the 440A(lower C, higher Cr) is tougher than the ATS, less likely to shatter on impact with a rock or bone. Finally, if I remember correctly, Randall makes some hunters out of 440A...
Hope this drivel helps
Aaron
