SOG vs Kershaw vs Spyderco

So did a Spyderco.....

...severing my index finger.

Luckily, it was reconnected. I'll take a linerlock over a lockback any day after that incident.

You know what they say about opinions...

Thats very unfortunate, Im just glad that you were mostly ok and your finger was able to be saved.

All opinions are valid as long as they are formed from real experiences and not bias. Would you care to share how the lock failure occured so that we may hopefuly avoid the same situation?

I like my sog aegis: actually picked it (over a millitary and a kershaw g10 Tyrade) to carry to a bad part of town on saturday because of the point and the light weight/AO combo. Also like the other 2 companies and own many more of their knives than SOG.

FWIW, I repair my father's Flash 2 AO spring every time he comes to visit me. It's not a robust design.
Love the Blur, would be really nice if I didn't have to ask Kershaw for a replacement torsion bar after about every 50 openings ...

As mentioned before, Kershaw's designs (some) are pretty organic and cool looking, maybe a little gimmick laden for my taste.

Had Nut'n Fancy's "Everything" Knife, the SOG Aegis ... hated it. materials, quality, etc., just not in the top 3. Maybe I expected too much. Granted, it's the only SOG folder I've owned, not willing to try another when there are better values out there.

Love the Benchmade Mini Grip, Full size Grip feels cheap in hand, great knife though. Dig the Axis lock. Nothing in the Benchmade red line really makes me want to spend dollars however.

It's Spyderco for me. End of story when talking about production folders. The most simple (ingenious) design, all about function. No springs, A/O, no doo-dads. Top materials, fit/finish, warranty/service... as good as it gets IMHO.

-I also had a lockback fold on my pinky many years ago. It wasn't a spyderco but it certainly made me wary of the lockback design. The harder I grip any of the quality linerlocks I have, the more secure they feel and look at the liner/tang junction. I just got one of the G 10 Tyrades and it locks up like some frame locks I've handled. The tang is properly radiused and the liners are thicker than any linerlock I've seen to date.

some gerbers arent that bad. the gerber applegate combat folder is awesome, i havent been able to put mine down since i got it, and its a knife that people would mostly recommend against buying. nothing wrong with trying something different or new every now and then.

another favorite of mine is the kershaw whirlwind, a knife that also got a negative response on these forums.

if you are set on those 3 then the answer is spyderco endura with british racing green FRN handles:D a kershaw leek is close behind, SOG is trailing far behind, kinda back there with gerber
if you are open to other brands, then the benchmade griptilian wins handsdown for like $60.

Sticking with the original 3 companies, Spyderco, Kershaw, and SOG, I'll give a few opinions from both using the knives and the customer service.

Out of the three, I'd say they all specialize in different categories.

Spyderco is what you go to when you want a high quality production knife that typically runs around $100-200 depending on how much of a spyderholic you are (myself included :D)
-Excellent customer service, you can speak directly with the owner and his staff here in the spyderco forum (one of my favorite companies ).

Kershaw has a TON of knives well under the $100 mark that are all great to have and use. I still think the new G-10 tyrades could have easily been as much as the ZT 0200's and most sell for 2/3 of the 0200 price.
-Excellent customer service, you used to be able to speak directly with the staff here but can still discuss at the kershaw social group.

SOG has it's fixed blades. Their assisted openers could use some adjustments, but the arc-locked knives are very nice IMO. The Vulcan is a very good deal if you ask me. The only problem I see with SOG is that it seems that the folders get the back burner.
-OK customer service, depends who you speak with, Chris here is a great guy, but there's horror stories of a lady who answers the phone at SOG :foot:

Once again, thanks dudes!!! Man...ya'll are makin it hard on me!!

The 2 that I am really drawn to are the Spyd. Endura and the Kers. Blur based on size and blade size. I will go with the entry level Spydy if I go that route...upgrade on my next purchase if I go the way of Spyderco collection madness that many on this forum have ;).

Watched a Youtube review on some SOG's. Saw what many of you refer to. While the overall "look" was tres kewl (Trident and Aegis)...the quality looked kind of cheezy.

this thread needs some pic's!:D

too many more to list by both spyderco and kershaw. if you like em big, these are for you!

i dont know i personally like SOG's but im an air force guy and still exploring the effectiveness of diff knife types spyderco and kerkshaws are ok but u kinda have to sharpen them out of the package to get that lethal edge. however SOG's are razor sharp out of the box and are also easy to sharpen.

Doesn't match my experience at all. Kershaws and Spydies have always come sharp out of the box. That being said, "lethal" sharp out of the box matters for nothing, the true measure is how it sharpens and holds it's edge. With VG-10 being the standard steel that spyderco uses, it is head and shoulders above any standard SOG which uses 420?, 440A and AUS 8 as its standard steels. SOG has never impressed me. Get the Endura or as another form member suggested the g-10 s30v kershaw leek. I own and love both.

My Para D2 was bought new from a reputable dealer and came to me the dullest new knife I've ever bought. It took some swipes on a course DMT to get the edge going. That said, all the other new Spydercos I've handled, as well as new Kershaws, were sharp as hell.

Okay. I read the reviews. Thanks. I have made my purchase. And the winner was....

SOG Aegis!!!!! Black zytel and satin blade

Nutnfancy's Youtube hype and digital reviews are what really sold me. No matter what, it will be a good addtion to the herd no matter what. I will go with the Aegis, Flash 2 and Trident. So if you have grief....blame him...not me...I am a mere pawn in the game of collecting and having fun at the marketing expense of steel!

Next stop.....Spyderco. ;)

if youre happy then its all good.

once you get ready to buy the spyderco go for the g10, I dont think anyone does it better than them.
