The Navy Exchange is having a 20% off sale on SOGs this week. They have a couple in stock here are my choices...which would you buy and why? SOG isn't my favorite but I can't pass up these prices and no tax.

SOG Pentagon elite...large folder, unfortunately serrated, AUS 8A stainless.

SOG Seal Pup...once again serrated, but I think a nice sized knife for canoeing etc.. only $48...kind of always wanted one of these any opinions...?

SOG Flash II Not serrated but assisted opening

SOG Revolver...interesting but I don't know if I would need the SAW since I regularly carry a leatherman or SAK.

Right now I'm leaning towards a folder that I could EDC since I already have a few fixed blades that I take into the mountains with me...

Thanks in advance...

I would get the Revolver, but that is since I have always wanted one of those. I know the person who designed the technology for the Revolver posts on the SOG Forum here on BF so he could answer any questions you have about it. If I was going to get one of the folders it would be the Flash II, since I am not a fan of serrated blades.

yeah, I'm not too crazy about serrations either (hard to sharpen in the field unless you have a dedicated serrated knife sharpener. However, I've come to realize that what I carry EDC is not what I'll be carryng in the wilderness.

Right now, in the woods I have either a Ka-Bar or a BK-7 plus a SAK or leatherman (sometimes I think these are not worth the extra weight when compared to a SAK.) I've had the same trusty SAK since I was a Boyscout and it has never failed me...

pay a little more and get the seal pup elite.

you will not be disappointed

i don't see why you should pay more for the taiwanese version than the seki, japan standard version. it may well be the better knife, but they should cost less. i'd get the standard seal pup if i had to stick to the list. i'd get the trident folder (usa) otherwise. or five moras.

sorry. i'm just bitter about all the 420j2 they've been selling.

All of the SOG stuff I own is either Fixed Blades: SF BOWIE S1 or TRIDENT S2 stuff or the Multi Tools Paratool or Power Plier. I love that stuff. I take that back, I do own an original TOMCAT folder that was the knife of the year a few years back but it is a workhorse and not a combat type folder. I do not by the taiwanese stuff, onlt the Seki, Japan stuff because it was the original stuff. Maybe the Taiwanese is better, I do not know.

the sog seal pup elite i have is not stamped made in taiwan...

the reason i prefer the elite over the regular version is the lack of serrations and the fact that its made of Aus8 over Aus6.

the crkt's are made in taiwan as well but they are very good knives.. i know the seal pup elite is better then the regular seal pup because i've had both. i sold the seal pup (which is still a great knife) and bought the elite version to test out. from my experiences with the blade i prefer the the elite over the regular. hence why i suggested it.

cheers

unfortunately the sale doesn't include the seal pup elite (with a non-serrated edge that would be a gimme, only the standard seal pup.

what is the problem with AUS 6? I've had a taiwan made CRKT M-16 in AUS 6 and it has been a reliable knife for the price...only thing i'm not sure about is the heat treat on these sog knives made over seas.

first, all the sog fixed blades, escept the new team leader, are made overseas. either taiwan or japan.

second, aus 6 is not a lesser steel and aus 8. i had an aus4 knife that i was very pleased with in the past. aus6 is slightly lower in carbon than aus8. the aus6 is supposed to be tougher and more corrosion resistant. aus8 should have higher hardnes and wear resistance. the different geometries of the two knives is probably the difference he felt, i believe one is thicker. differences in the properties of the steel would be barely detectable, if at all. two blades of aus6 and aus8 of similar quality with identical geometry would be practically indistinguishable in use.

finally, the elite is made in taiwan. if that was stamped on the blade, no one would pay $80 for it. being made in taiwan does not make the elite a bad knife. it makes it an overpriced knife.

i never said that aus 6 was an inferior steel compared to aus 8 merely that i preferred one over the other. :o

i did some research myself and found that the elite is made in taiwan. thanks for pointing it out :)

i think plenty of people out there buy knives even though it has taiwan stamped on it.... :o

i understand that if the blades were the exact same with different steels the differences would be hard to notice. however the blade designs are different. the elite version is thicker. i merely suggested that he pick up the elite, i did not wish to anger anyone with my suggestion. :)

I think there might be some confusion here over the SOG Pentagon model (fixed double edged) and the SOG Pentagon elite (folder). The fixed model is AUS6a whereas the Pentagon elite folders are AUS8A made in Seki Japan.

I have 2 Pentagon elite II and a Pentagon elite I (about a year old I'm told) and am happy with all of them. I do think they are a bit smoother than the Axis locks, which I also have a few of. You can always remove the serrations if you don't care for them. I dont like Assisted openers as I dont see them as an EDC necessity. I couldn't tell you about the Revolver as I've no experience handling them. Personally I would take the 8A over the 6A. If they changed production within the year from Japan to Taiwan could be a possibility I suppose, but, I think you may be confusing the Pentagon for the Pentagon elite series.

I think Darth will have to also consider whether he wants a fixed blade or folder. Hope this helps.

thanks for the info, chugo...that was exactly what i was looking for. I think I am going to go with the pentagon elite II folder. A friend of mine had the pentagon elite I, and I was really impressed with the locking mechanism as well...very smooth. Looks like a good EDC knife.

I would go for the Seal Pup if it is offered in AUS8. Regular AUS6 isn't bad, but I would go for the AUS8 model if at all possible. If EDC means leave in your truck/car/bag, then go for the Seal Pup. If it means carrying on you at all times, the Pentagon Elite looks like your only choice. For going into the mountains, the Revolver would work well, but you said you already have that area filled out.

yeah, I usually leave a ka-bar, hatchet, and folding shovel in my truck. I was thinking of the seal pup for canoe/kayaking, but i haven't really done much of that lately anyway. i think the Pentagon elite II will be a good all - around utility blade that will replace either the buck 110 or CRKT M-16 that i carry now. On the ship I have a BM AFO (automatic)(great blade!) but you can't carry that around in Socal! Thanks again...

I agree, great knife for the price; don't know if that is one of the ones on sale or not. Personally I've carried the Flash II for the last couple of years and I love it. Works great for what I use it for but I wouldn't call it a survival knife.

the saw in the revolver is better than the SAK lockblades, and a LOT better than the smaller SAK and the leatherman saws. Still, unless you prune a lot or something, you wanty a better saw for W&S.

I like the flash a bit, but if I was picking one and already had a decent folder I'd take a seal pup. (or get a nice folder and wait until I get the next batch of sierra hiker fixed blades done :D )

The Rovoler would be coming with me. I have a revolver H and its my favorite stand alone blade. Great knife, awsome quailty.

I'd pick the Flash II or SEAL Pup. Own and use them both. They're both very good. Can't go wrong with either.
