Just to put things into perspective. The prominences at the limb of the sun are jetting out about 25,000 miles or so. The dark lines called filaments on the sun are actually prominences seen head on. There are not many sun spots as the sun is in the lower end of the 11 yr. sun spot cycle.
I use a simple set-up. I have a Tel Vue 102 refractor scope. On the end I put a Solar Max Coronado 90mm HA filter with a 15mm blocking filter after the diagonal. I than just use my Cannon digital camera and snap a picture after I focus it. Than I process it to take the red out.
