These come bare wood, and I put maybe 8 coats of boiled linseed oil on it, each coat left 24 hours before wipe off and recoat. I split some 5” rounds of super dry cedar, as the handle went thru the rounds with the blade it gave some light marks on the wood , nothing detrimental but maybe a leather splitting guard should be installed if you going to split with it and want to keep that wood clean. Grain has good orientation and the head is rock solid on the shaft. Very sharp edge and very pointy at each end. Nice hand made leather cover, the cover came bare raw leather and I did several soaks in neets foot oil to soften and darken the leather. . $110 shipped f&f or Zelle
