As I started This batch Andy Roy (my mentor at fiddleback forge) sat me down and explained why I was no longer his apprentice and that he considered me a knife maker now. *I see this batch of huntsmen as my graduation batch, so I have put little more of myself in these. *

The first is 3/32 “ o-1 steel with a full saber grind and a hand rubbed finish. *The handle is a pencil thin hunter orange g-10 , under highly figured black walnut. *The Walnut is from a board that I have kept around the shop for a day like today. It is one of a few boards that my wood working mentor gave me. *These boards came off his old homeplace. Some his father cut himself from a tree that had been on the property, others he and *his father had collected over time because of their complexity and beautiful grain.

handle length * * 4-1/2”

The second is also 3/32” o-1 steel with a full saber grind a hand rubbed finish. *The handle has a paper thin royal blue liner over Magnolia. *Apart from being a beautiful piece of wood this handle has a story. *When I asked my wife to marry me I had more skill than money, her ring was simple and it was Christmas so I wanted to give her more. *She had always loved Magnolia trees so after much searching, I found a job site that had a magnolia tree that had to go. *With a few called in favors by the above mentioned mentor I had a 6’ section of trunk planked and dried. *A barter with a client for some stain glass work and a few late nights I had a jewelry box made of magnolia with a stained glass magnolia blossom in it. *I used some of this board twice more to make keepsake boxes that held the cigar boxes from when I gave out cigars after each of my boys were born. *Now I used some of that wood to make a handle for one of my first knives as a knife maker.
total length * * * * *9-3/4””
handle length * * 4-1/2”
blade length * * * *5-1/4” of 3/32” o-1 tool steel

The last two are 1/8” o-1 steel hand rubbed with a full saber grind and a swedge. *The handles are 1/8” blk liner with g-10 bolsters. *The wenge from the handle came from the drop after I made my first custom ordered humidor. *This story is not as long but the wood is all as dear to me as the others, because it was the first time I was selling some thing that was entirely me, my idea, my plans, my labor. *
total length * * * *9-3/4”
handle length * *4-1/2”
blade length * * * *5-1/4” of 1/8” o-1 steel

Dan,

You certainly have graduated in style. Those are some really fine looking knives.

I love the contour you gave the handles. They look like the would be comfortable as hell and provide a good grip even if your hands were a little wet. Congrats my friend your skill really shows.

Wow! These are truly great knives at great prices guys. Dan gifted me one of these yesterday in honor of his graduation, and I am loving the knife. That sheath is worth $50. These are eye popping deals!
