I set out to try my hand at a hidden tang knife, so I decided on a Finnish design known as a puukko. As far as I can tell, puukkos are a pretty straight forward, outdoor knife. The criteria appears to be that the handle and blade length are nearly equal, no hand guard, hidden tang and all under roughly 9 inches.
"Done," I thought to myself, "this should be a walk in the park." Turns out, it wasn't a walk in the park. Mind you, It wasn't as bad as climbing a mountain either. No, this project was more of a trek through a wilderness center - fun, and sometimes tricky if straying from the path, but the path is still easily found if things start getting too rough.
I had an idea of where I wanted to go with the knife, but nothing was envisioned specifically. This gave me the freedom to let each action guide me to the next. For no rhyme or reason this is the result. Is it still a puukko? Sure. But it could also perhaps be called a kaiken tanto, as it drawls some similarities from the Japanese knife. The most notable being the hamon and shirasaya-inspired sheath.
In the end, it doesn't really matter. It's art. It's beauty. It's functionality. It is so easy to get lost in the pattern of the wood, like sun rays beaming through the clouds. Or where the wood stops, the grains seem to transfer along the pattern in the hamon.
We are all usually so busy with the riffraff of our day-to-day lives that we miss out on the small wonders around us. Maybe we should all get out more. Sniff the roses. Take a walk in the park...
Let me know what you guys would classify the knife as.
