RAY COVER, SR "STORMBRINGER"
Originally designed by collector Curt Truell, the "Stormbringer" was made by two or three makers back in the 80's for Truell's collection. I have only seen two engraved ones by Joe Kious. Ray Cover, Sr also made several of this model, but not embellished as were those by Joe.
I myself have owned four or five of this pattern over time, all by Ray Cover, Sr, all of them unengraved. I am told by David Broadwell that Ray Cover, Sr subhilt boots of this type were never embellished, unlike those by Joe Kious, which always were.
There was a time in the 80's when I owned around 35 of Ray's knives, primarily as a minor investment. Jim Frey (husband of scrimshander Sandra Brady) had entered into the "new" business of stabilized woods, and he supplied all the wood materials for those that were fixed blades. The only thing that kept Ray from realizing greatness as a maker was a desire to get out and go fishing so much more than to make knives. Anyone who owned any of Ray's knives would tell you they were absolutely perfectly made, both fixed blades and folders.
While this "Stormbringer" design is evocative of the 80's for alot of early collectors, it's styling is very, very NOW!! If you're thinking about whether this is as good a design as suggested here, just ask Paul Long. I believe he still owns a couple and would probably agree this is one of the best boot knife designs ever produced.
