I have been using sta brite solder with flux for my guards. I stumbled across another brand of silver solder at my local hardware store. Sta brite has 4% silver and 96% tin. This stuff has 2% silver and 98% tin. The big difference is that this stuff has a flux core so you do not have to apply flux separately. Sta brite from Jantz is about $7 for a kit. This stuff is under $3 for about 3 times as much solder plus there is no shipping to pay. I have used it twice on guards and cannot decide if it flows as well as sta brite cause the guards were not the best fit. Can anyone tell me their experiences about flux core silver solders? Will this stuff I got work as well as the sta brite or will the separate flux as with sta brite perform better? Cory

Stick with the Stabrite. Started with flux core, and the Stabrite is well worth the extra cost.

What is the better points of sta brite? This other stuff doesn't seem to find the crevise as well and seems to work better if you brush the excess off due to the fact that it doesn't flow down into the crevise between the tang and the guard as well. It does stick well however. Cory

I have used cheap Kester brand as well as sta brite.

The best solders I have ever used are Eutectic from Kovals (godawful expensive but worth it) and TIX soft solder.

Eutectic is tremendously strong stuff and works super with stainless guards.

I have used quite a bit of the soft solder too....like TIX....my general rule is that if I cant get the Eutectic to flow, I end up using TIX...and that melts at 275F.

I "sweated" an hooded rifle sight on the end of a hard kicking 7.62X54 I built off a Mosin Nagant with TIX soft solder. I have shot that rifle alot and I don't think it will ever come off of there.
