Soldering guard on CS Trailmaster

Would appreciate input on this problem.

I am rehandling a CS Trailmaster (Carbon V).
One of the problems with the knife I am
working on is that the kraton handle gets
water inside it and when you squeeze it,
water bubbles out of the grip on the top
(ricasso) and bottom of the guard. I want
to seal this area as tightly as possible
before I do the rehandling work so that
water cannot enter the guard or grip area.

Has anyone done this before? Any tips?
The spine on a Trailmaster is 5/16", so I
will have to be REALLY careful with my
torch, if I am going to solder.

What about something like JB Weld? Any other
suggestions? I want the seal to be permanent
and low-maintenence.

For the handle, I am planning on milling out
the matched ironwood scales to accomodate the
tang, and then epoxy and pin. Seems to be
straight forward.

I appreciate all input.

Thanks,

Mark

I'm doing the same to my son's CS bowie, but replacing the ill-fitting brass guard with a chunk of wagon wheel wrought iron, and stabilized maple burl for the handle. Think I will do the acetic acid etch on the blade as well, since Junior's hands will rust SS overnite!
Press-fit the guard on, then J-B Weld the bottom.

I just did a SRK with hardwood and expoxy, The handle design was three pieces, the wood guard, and the two handle slabs and I expoxied all three together making a water proof handle. If you look up a old post about the Mad dog knife cut away photos its easy to understand. good luck.

Harry,

What does the acetic acid do? Is it a blade coating aiding against corrosion? If so,where do you get it?

Thanks

Mike
