Soldering Guards

if you attach the guard before heat treat, it will be very difficult to finish sand the ricasso.

Yes there is, some go up to over 1800°. But if your going that hot might as well just forge weld the guard/bolsters in place. The big problem I can see with soldering/brazing befor heat treat is scale cleanup. As well as possibility poping the guard free in the quench.

Well, I finally ordered some Stay Brite Silver Bearing solder, and Stay Clean Liquid flux. Wish me luck.

Good luck

Thanks JT. Now I just need to build one of these :D But I'll stick to a mini propane torch for now.

Ok that right there is BAD ASS. I need on of those, clamp onto the tang and plug in.

There is a loveless video, I have the book but no video.

Personally,
I care too much to the integrity of my hands.
I would never use a knife that does not have a guard bound to the blade with pin. In my opinion the only brazing is not enough, the real strength is made by 2-3 mm steel pin that runs through guard and blade.

These are my pics, I use stay brite silver solder and Black & Decker HG1300 Dual Temperature Heat Gun

awesome, i saw that soldering thing in his video. there are tons of those hexacon irons on ebay ! anyone know the correct wattage ? :)

A little tip I can give about soldering is how to control where it goes. When I do it I put a pencil line where I don't want the solder to go. The solder will not cross the line and it acts like a dam. That being said you can use this to do all kinds of things. If you want to solder from the top then use the pencil and make the point blunt and draw around the seam where you want solder. This will put pencil line on both sides of the seam that needs soldering. I then make the pencil line wider and your good to go.

My question is , when using liquid flux , how do you avoid washing away the lead .?

I use a squirt bottle for the flux that has a metal syringe like tube on it. I just squeeze a small amount around the joint and as long as the fit is good on the guard, the solder will stay right there at the joint. Clean up with a brass graver I rarely have to do any sanding anymore.
