Hello, this may also be off-topic, but my local RadioShack is going out of business and most everything is at a large discount.
I'd like to pick up a soldering iron, but they are priced anywhere from $30-$150. Any suggestions on what to look for, what I'd need? I realize that's a hugely open ended question and probably depends on its intended use, but I'm not sure what is will be used for but thought it would be a good thing to have in my tool box.
Thanks

For almost any solder jobs in electronics and hobby work - an insulated Ungur type handle with an assortment of element assemblies and a variety of tips is great. You would want elements in the area of 15W, 30W, 50W and 75W will do most any type work from a PC board to solder repairs on small things.

If you plan on doing copper sculpture work, get a 300 watt element and handle (radio shack won't have those).

For soldering guards, you want a heat gun or small jewelers torch. The small refillable butane torches also work well for guards.

Thanks, Stacy. (seems like I've been saying that a lot lately:thumbup:)

If you can pick up a soldering STATION, you will like it much more than a set temp iron.

There aren't real pricey if you get a basic one but I'm not sure radio shack carries them.
