Soldiers only please...(or vets)

The marines aren't for everyone. I would definately get in good shape. It will be one less thing to worry about!! You need to go in with an open mind and a positive team attitude. Their (TIs) purpose is to create extreme stress so they can flush out the the mama's boys, the excessively stupid, and nuts in a short period of time. If you keep this in mind and concentrate on doing your best, you will be ok. They will instruct you on everything you need to do and know in great detail.

I mean taking the ASVAB in high school. I meant that it doesn't really reveal a huge amount about your character.
I see your point about getting an idea of how good you will do, but he already said he isn't failing in school; so I don't think failing is much of a problem.

Late to the thread but figured Id throw my two cents in. Army reserve now but was formerly National Guard and have done Field Artillery(combat arms) and aviation, Blackhawk and Chinook maintainer and just recently completed 68W school( combat medic) school. Of the four MOS's I have if I had to choose one it would be medic or in the case of the Navy/Marines, corpsman. As a young male you can be assigned to a line unit and do all the ground pounding hooah stuff until someone is injured then you get to be doc. You will train with the infantry,Cav, MP's etc. that you are attached to and deploy to the field and sandbox with them and get to kick in doors etc.. In addition to being a shooter though is the healing aspect. Out of a squad/platoon you will be the force multiplier as it is your job to look after the health and well being of your other team members and if it comes to it keep them alive. When and if your body breaks down or you want to try something different the MOS , offers you the opportunity to go work in a hospital, TMC, go flight, etc. and the they have plenty of high speed shools for you. Physicians assistant, OEMS,Bloodlabs, etc. . Not to mention the opportunity to go airborne, air assault, Ranger medic, Special forces medic, etc. . As for the physial demands of the job of a soldier in general it pays to be in shape. You will be required to lift and carry a body armoured fallen soldier, his weapon and gear and yours too.

My dad was a Marine, and when I was younger, I wanted to join. However, a back injury playing football in 10th grade, and a serious motorcycle accident took care of those plans..

I have had a good life, and been very fortunate in many things, but there will always be one thing lacking. I'm almost 50 years old and can't change it, but I still have the desire. You can always look back afterwards and think, that really wasn't what I thought it would be, but you will always have a huge sense of pride and accomplishment. Thats better than looking back saying, I sure wish I had tried.

My best friends cousin joined the Corp when he was 18. He came from a bad homelife (abusive drunk father) and just wanted a way out. He retired from the Marines last year after over 25 years of service.

We were all your age at one time, and there are a lot of decisions to make. It can seem overwhelming, but it will work out. My son is 14, so we are not far from going through that with him.
As a parent, we all want the best for our kids, and don't like the thought of them going of to war and being being injured or killed, but we also respect their wishes and desires, and even if we don't agree with them, we will always be supportive in their decisions.

Currently deployed to Iraq. US Army Air Traffic Controller. Don't know about Snipers, but I'm certain there is alot of math involved but with everything, the military can and will teach you. I didn't just start controlling aircraft off the street. Like everyone else has said, don't join the Army looking for the Marines, you will be disappointed, they are nothing alike. If you want to be a Marine, go see a Marine recruiter. Don't believe everything he says, but be respectful and pay attention. Good luck!

And to all my brothers in this thread, thank ya'll for your service! We all bleed for the same cause.
