Soliciting thoughts and opinions on a small knife for a colleague

I remember when he gave it to you. He and I were discussing it, or one like it, as part of a trade that never happened. I'm glad you got it!

If the guy is a non-knife guy, I would suggest the Case Peanut with Scissors and Bail. These are available right at your $50 price point.

I find that for modern life, a pair of folding scissors is as useful, or maybe even more useful than a cutting blade. My opinion on this is that for a person who isn't used to carrying a cutting tool in their pocket, it's better to give them something that goes beyond a cutting blade.

A small SAK, perhaps with wood scales, would be another option. I like the scissors on the Wengers much better than the Victorinox models.

Lastly, you could get 2 great knives for $50. My EDC carry:

I know its about $25-$30 more than you want to spend but you might look at the GEC White Owl too. Single spring, two-blade. Smaller knife at about 3 1/2" closed. Very gentlemanly depending on the scales.

Thanks, all, the great suggestions just keep coming!
I'm going to take a trip to my not-quite-local Case dealers this weekend to compare some of these side-by-side. I think they also carry Buck and some other makers, so with any luck I'll be able to explore some other options. I snatched up a new (but no box & papers) sway back jack for a stellar price, so I'll see how that fares when it arrives. That one might just stay with me... wait, I'm supposed to be looking for someone else. Oh well...

The scissors options seem nice, too. I hope the dealers will have one that I can play with.
I'm also going to make a point to try to tease some more info out of my buddy. There is a chance that he's already carrying something, but we've never really talked about it. This doesn't necessarily have to be a surprise, so I can try to figure out what he likes/needs/wants. The more I think about it, he probably has a blade or two lying around, so it'll give us something nice and non-academic to chat about while I get a sense of what would work for him.

This is turning out to be a fun project!

You can't do better than a mini copperhead. It's my favorite small carry. In fact, I haven't carried mine in a few days and I have been scratching around trying to find it. I will or just pocket my backup in the deep canyon bone. I have three of them altogether now.
