Solid fixed blade "for the money"?

You should take a look at the Cold Steel SRK. Cold Steel has been selling this knife for quite a long time. Proven performance, and it's standard issue for Navy SEALs in BUDS. Everyone who has one seems to love it.

Condor also has some nice cheap and fairly good alternatives, if you decide against a Becker. Then again, for a relatively small blade, 100 might get you a custom too. Have you considered checking out the exchange?

The ESEE has proven itself to me after almost 2 years of beating the snot out of it.
It rusts if not taken care of but all good tool steel blades will.

For under $100 take a look at the Benchmade Rant models, some nice options in 440c or D2 (depending on model) with overall good leather or plastic sheaths (although I only have a leather sheath so can't comment on the plastic as much), or the Condor nessmuk, one of the few more affordable nessmuks if you like the pattern, or an Izula 2 if want something smaller. All are a good price to quality ratio IMO!

(edit - not sure as of when, but just checked and looks like the Rants are discontinued now but you may still be able to find one out there if interested)

Best bang for you buck, solid performers? Beckers... I think that might be obvious about now... The line has SSSOOO much diversity that can really fit anyone's needs.

Large? BK9, BK4, BK7, BK5, BK3... All solid proven performers.

Medium? BK2, BK10, BK15, 16, and 17..

Small? BK13, BK14, BK11, BK24...

All blades under a Benjamin.... Unless you count in the BK12 which would fit in the Medium Large Category, not made by KA-BAR...

You can find Micarta for 99-100% of the models, and multiple sheathing options aftermarket.

You buy the blade and its an out of the box performer... if you want to upgrade handles? bang... easy... Sheath??? easy... Plus there is a huge support group here in the forums for all of us who cannot get enough... and need help.... :D

Well........thread can be closed now. :D

I don't think this knife has ever been mentioned, but have you considered the brutish TOPS Mil-Spie 3 or 5?

I researched the Schrade Extreme Survival SCHF3- That is a big knife. I was wanting a BK15? (trailing point)..I have a BK2 now and an RD4. The RAT 3 looks good, but now the RAT 4 has my attention!!

Thanks guys!

My Beckerhead counterparts will probably tar and feather me for this, but you have your general bushcraft blades covered. My suggestion would be either a good Tramontina, or a wood processor like a Bahco Laplander or a good hatchet. Just my opinion though.

Great idea. Now I have even more too sift through! I have used my full sized SOG hawk on wood and it does quite well. Perfect for the kids to use. In fact--a couple weeks ago in Yellowstone they used it and brought back a pile of firewood. Not bad for a couple of girls! LOL! I do need a good hatchet.

Ka-Bars are by far the best fixed blades for the money. They're made in the USA and come hair shaving sharp.

Someone else mentioned the Gerber "Big Rock" for $25 and I have to agree with it. I keep one in my camp cooking gear and it is a frequently used tool when I am in the woods. It has a thin blade profile so it is a good slicer and it is a pretty sturdy full tang design.

I also have to say that I don't usually go into the woods to hike, camp, fish or hunt unless I have a Becker blade with me. Hard to beat a BK2 for a do anything bush knife.
