Solutions for lower back pain

The ability to LIFT my back up until the muscles relax while I sleep has kept my herniated back from spasming for the 6 years I have used my Sleep Number Bed--not an advertisement, my personal experience on my bed.

This is the ticket. Core strengthening is paramount.

I didn't read all the responses but have been having similar issues for the last 2 yrs or so and what these guys Old CW4 and HikingMano said is the key to the root of the issue (at least for me it was)...Strengthening your core is where it's at. The mattresses and other things mentioned are probably all good, but more of a band aid solution I'd think. Google YouTube search "Core muscles" or similar words and that should point you in the right direction.

Couldn't agree more, core exercises are the key. Proper mattress only helps rather than hurts, but using the muscles to hold the spine in place is what makes the structural difference.

Agreed! So is utilizing stretching and relaxation techniques which can be learned by taking a Yoga class or two.

A good back brace helps protect when you are actually doing the physical activities that stress the back.

And if you do feel that twitch - take a couple of shots (or more) of Patron - It's the only real legal drug

When I hurt my back the only thing that really helped with the pain was massive quantities of Jack Black

One other thing i found that helps me out. Some times the cause for the back pain are muscles that cant relax causing a pull on one side of the spine. What i would do is make a HOT bath and add a cup of Epsom salt to it. Get a book and lay in the bath until the water is cool. Remember one thing its a very good relaxent so you would feel weak lol. Also go to the bathroom first if you know what i mean.

After i get out i rub some Tiger Palm on my back put a thick shirt on so the bed wont smell and go to sleep. Most of the time i feel like a new man the next morning. If you are married or have a GF ask her to give you a massage as soon as you get out of the tub. It also works on sore muscles mix some of the salt in hot water dip a towel in there and then wrap it around the sore spot..

+72 yr old back....EVERY morning before I get out of bed I stretch my back as follows;

pull one leg up to my chest several times, do the same with other leg..then both legs to chest..get up.

Sounds simple but waking my back up BEFORE I hit the floor has worked well for me. Still possible to hurt my old back... if I treat it like I was 18, YMMV.

Stretching and exercise if you can. Otherwise, you may want to try a Tens Unit. My wife has to use one because she has two herniated discs in her back.

I've been swimming regularly this summer (sometimes up to a mile) thinking that a non-weight bearing workout would strengthen without straining....It doesn't hurt when I'm swimming, but as soon as I get out it does.

This sounds like you could possible have a crack in your lower lumbar.

Best thing is to get an MRI scan. And if you have a chip or a crack, just have the good doctor dig it out.

I had a back operation back in '97 when I was in my late twenties. It took me only three days to get back on my feet and eight days to fly.

I had slight, reoccuring discomfort for about a year before. But It was early spring baseball strike swing that aggravated it and possible cracked the disc. By July the pain was shooting down my left leg and I decided to see the doctor. Underwent operation that evening. Like new since.

A lot of people will tell you to avoid operations but I also see a lot of people who are living in pain WITH the pain. They go through tons of medication and seek out treatment form everyone who tells them to keep coming back and see them.

Anyway, good luck with you stuff.

a apin management doctor works for me, i tried chiro, stretching, rehab/etc, nothing else helps nowadays, i used to could get by on the stretching/etc but when i turned 45 or so it started getting worse, doesnt help much now, i guess lotsa sex keeps it loose lol.

chiros seem to help a lotta folks, but they never did a thing for me, they all seemed kinda flakey to boot.

What other people said: train both back and abdominal muscles. But be careful, don’t exercise for to long.

I know you talked to a physician before, but don’t close that door because during a first examination nothing was found.

Not everything’s shows up on x-rays. Let’s say there is a rough spot on a piece of bone. It only starts to hurt when you work for a long time. The body tries to adjust and starts using different muscles. Those muscles start to ache after a while, but that is a symptom, not the original problem.

Dislocated 2 discs and tore my right erector spinae 2 years ago, I still sometimes get muscle pain in that area, exercise really helped me a lot.

I'm 50 years old . 17 years ago I was in a serious car accident and I had two fractures in my lower spine . I endured 2 years of physical therapy , chiropractic adjustments , etc, and I was convinced ( and told ) that I had reached "maximum medical improvement" . I still suffered a great deal .
Even though it hurt like hell I began an exercise regimen with light weightlifting and some fast walking . In about 2 months I had my first pain free day . ( In over 2 years ! ).
Now I exercise about 1 hour a day , 4 days a week and I rarely have any pain . My favorite way to get a good cardio workout and strengthen my core muscles is to climb stairs 2 at a time on the way up and ease down 1 at a time . For some reason when you step up high like this it involves a lot more of your back muscles and gives them a stretch while strengthening them at the same time .

and Good Luck

What everone else has said, and I would also add drink water everyday and though out the day. My understanding is that if your body is short of water it will pull it from other parts that do not needed at the moment. One way you can check into this is to check your lips, if they are dry, you are probably three days dehydrated. Coffee and booze do not count. Hope that is a help. Tom.
