Some 1095 questions

If your kiln is accurate you will benefit from it using 1095. How have you calibrated your eye? (Serious question... many makers are accurate in that respect)

Was doing this in the process with the kiln I think. Trying to memorize the color of the steel vs a color chart and the hold temp of the kiln. Takes years of practice no doubt, but with the kiln there at least is a controlled environment (set temp) that I can start from. Is this what you mean?
 
If you have the capability, and it seems that you do, to hold exact temperatures for a brief few minutes, and have access to a fast enough quench oil (Parks 50 is definitely the most popular for 1095), you can heat treat your 1095 with confidence. Just follow the "recipe" given above. It really is pretty simple if you have good temp control and proper quenchant. It's when we vary from those things for whatever reason that we cause ourselves the most trouble.
