Some Bark River Aurora questions...

For those that have or currently own one - here are my questions:

1) Can you get a dangler sheath for the Sharpshooter sheath - or as an option?

2) Do all Aurora's come with liners - or do liners only come on some models? If they come on some models - does this make the handle thicker?

3) Does handle material matter that much - or is it simply a preference for the end user? BRKT gives SO many options - name your best if there is a difference.

4) Did you find convex sharpening difficult?

Thanks,

TF

I know you can get an aftermarket dangler sheath, but I don't know if you can get one with the knife or not.

They don't all come with liners. The ones with liners will be slightly thicker.

All of mine have micarta handles & I'm real happy with them.
It was mainly a cost issue for me.

Convex sharpening is surprisingly easy. Once you get the hang of it.
The mousepad/sandpaper method along with a leather strop is all I use on mine.

Don't know about the dangler sheath...I just have the standard one.

My Aurora does not have liners so that is only on some models.

I have linen micarta handle scales which I like, but they're the only ones I've tried. Still...they are pretty nice!

I have been sharpening knives exclusively by hand for so long I give absolutely no thought to sharpening anymore...I just feel for an angle and sharpen. So I am not a good person to ask! But I don't think it's any harder than any other grind, personally.

1. Pretty sure it only comes with the standard sheath but you could order one of these along with it, though not a dangler in the strict sense, it will lower the ride of the blade.

2. Answered above.

3. I'm happy with my Black Micarta. Some people complain they are a little slippery, especially at first, due to a waxy coating. Others rough them up a little with some sandpaper. The exotic woods are gorgeous but I prefer having Micarta for woods duty.

4. I've never mastered convex sharpening. But then I also don't convex sharpen my Aurora. Just use a v bevel, currently at about 9 degrees per side and periodically convex the entire blade width to maintain geometry. Works for me.

No, but you can get a drop loop (linked above), or just run some cord through the standard loop and attach that to your belt as a kind of scandi dangler. Or order a custom.

No they don't all have liners.

3) Does handle material matter that much - or is it simply a preference for the end user? BRKT gives SO many options - name your best if there is a difference.
I think it's mostly preference. I have one in African Blackwood. Surprisingly, it's pretty grippy.

4) Did you find convex sharpening difficult?
No. I just freehand along the convex that's there when I need to sharpen it. Most of the time I just keep it stropped and it's been rare to actually need to sharpen it.
