some batoning with the Zubeng bowie

Interesting. How much did the blade cost if you do not mind stating

Nothing, it is an evaluation piece. I reground the edge again today and too another 1-2 degrees off of it. It is now almost identical in cross section at the edge to my SHBM.

I am very interested to hear how this steel compares to INFI.

If anyone is interested on splitting the cost of one of these bowies, then passing it around, let me know. I will throw in a Ranger RD9 as a comparison blade. I am not usually a good candidate for apss arounds, as my schedule can vary hugely since I changed careers. (18 hour work days at times are not uncommon).

If there is not enough $$$ for a bowie, maybe we can do a utility knife on a split and I will still toss in some sort of comparison blade.

Is the Rattweiler close to it in geometry? Would be an interesting comparison.

I can start a passaround on these in about a month. I can include the Ratweiler and MEUK as references.

Are the quoted prices for real?
We're talking Custom knife prices here!
Aren't we???
Or am I wrong?

These are custom by the common defination and certainly not unreasonable for a larged forged knife in general.

true.. I think that the price was around $1,000. which for a custom is in the range, especially considering the performance factor.

I would like to see it compared directly to your SHBM as a guideline. Both with the same edge grind.

590 grams with static and dynamic balance points of 4.5/10.5 cm in front of the index finger in the grip. 25 cm long blade, overall length is 38 cm. 5.0 cm wide blade with a full flat grind which tapers to an edge which was origionally 0.055" thick with a light convex grind of 13/15 degrees at the apex.

thanks, very similar in overall dimensions to the SHBM/BM-E and similar in size to the typical Blade competition blades. Just under 15 inches in OAL.

From the weight and dimensions I take it that it is about 1/4 inch thick? With the wide blade the edge geometry should be really good. I have the same edge on my SHBM.

By the way, I just saw a pic of your SHBM It looks horrible. Have you been digging in concrete again.:D

About 0.255 through the handle with a light distal taper, most of the blade is 0.225 or so.

Yes, I'd trim it down a little, about 0.035" I think makes an edge very robust, but this doesn't tend to make a large difference on cutting ability but does increase sharpening efficiency. I'd like to take the primary down on this to that extent but quite frankly that is way too much work for a 1" belt sander unless you have Thom's patience as he would likely even attempt it with a benchstone. But then again he has cats and anyone who has cats has the patience of Job anyway.

Still.

STILL!! sorry for the wrong sentence.:D

I wonder if the zubeng is truly Rc=67. It seems to me that there is no way you could avoid edge fracture at that hardness.

hey include me on the pass around for that zubeng(if you are doing one), I do want to make some comparisons of my own with it.

It is hidden in the flash, under artwork some of the picture thumbnails will expand into larger pictures with prices.
