Some due explanations - reloaded: broken in posts that don't timeout on server side

Thanks for the clarification Moon. I must have missed something somewhere, because I didn't realize you had the Smasher still.

To me, the Smasher looks kinda like an M-43 with the curves of my Dui Chirra. Very nice blade. Both of you have good taste!

I am at work now down under so will email you a little later in the evening.

Hopefully you will find a blade that will make you happy from my collection and consider it a replacement from HI. I will square if off with Yandu later if things work out.

Yes, they are similar; actually I'd say the Samsher has even more of a drop. The older Samshers (from 5-7 years ago) had less drop so I think they were resembling the DC even more.

An interesting fact is that the Samsher looks hollow-ground but if you look very VERY closely, you can see that there are some "micro-fullers" that you wouldn't notice otherwise. They may be below 1 mm...you need a certain angle and light to see them.

... Curious to know if the warp can be felt or just seen.
...
Slight warpage can be very pleasing depending on which way the blade is warped. There are some knives made with a single grind as some of you may be aware of eh singlegrind? Just depends on which side the grind is on and if your right or left handed. Now if the blade is warped in the "wrong" direction that could be a deal breaker in my opinion. I still wouldnt send it back tho. Id give it to a southpaw friend who can enjoy it rather than send it to Reno to be put in the scrap pile somewhere where no one enjoys it (if that really happens?).
If its curb appeal your looking for moonw and you cant get over it then id have to agree that HI may not be your thing.

... I would kill for another Sanu in my collection....

You got that right! Best fullers ever:thumbup:

...

Totally up to the individual as to whats acceptable, whats expected and everything that goes into the scheme of things.
Very true. If unacceptable simply send it back. Whatever side of the pond your from doesnt matter. If you live in a little deserted island in the South Pacific you expect everything you buy or sell will require some patience compared to living in the Conus. HI does have great customer support. Use it respectfully.

Guys, I am still not sure I was able to articulate in this thread what I wanted to.

Just to reiterate, the minimum that makes me happy with a knife: straight(er) blade, good heat treat, ability to take it out of its scabbard. All other aspects regarding fit and finish were on top and at this point...moot points.

I do have kukris (one from HI and other manufacturers), other ethnic blades made by hand, that, while more modest in the fit and finish department, still satisfy these requirements. Maybe those are happy exceptions.

I won't post anymore here, if anyone wants to continue the discussion in particular on anything, please use my email address. This thread already had more views than I am comfortable with and maybe, at this point, the best idea is to let it burried by newer ones.

Guilty as charged ndog! I put a single grind edge on most of the blades I make, and many of my users. Fell in love after my first Emerson knife. Can't beat it for overall edge retention, strength, and sharpness. Actually the one I posted the pic of, that my friend has in Costa Rica, is a convex single grind. That one was hair-popping sharp. I grind on the left side of the blade, as does Emerson, which seems a little counter-intuitive for a righty, but it works best IMO. If it was ground the other way, it would bite super deep into anything, and so grinding opposite the dominant hand is preferable. Don't know which direction of warp would feel best though. I'm sure that's based on the individual though.

Moon, my want list was plenty long enough without a Smasher on it. Why'd you have to go and mention that about the fullers?? Y'all know I'm weak around any blade with nice fullers...:D

Edit after reading above post: Think I have to agree with you there buddy, this thread has served it's purpose, and then some. Feel free to contact me personally if you would like any other specific input
