I appreciate how Himalayan Imports runs their own production facilities in Nepal, unlike their competitors in the Western world who typically contract out the khukuris they sell. Having control of the production facilities enables HI to not only offer customers the possibilities of special orders, but (more important to me) ensures that working conditions can be fair.
If you want a "fair trade" khukuri, you can get it from HI.
Newcomers to the forum might not initially "get" HI's way of doing business, probably because we're all accustomed to dealing with dehumanizing bureaucracies where we have to assert ourselves to get things done, and stand up for ourselves if we want respect (even if it's just self-respect). I once automatically played the "Aggrieved Customer" role at a restaurant where an elderly gentleman had the misfortune to be my waiter, and some "mistakes" were made with my food order. Later that night, I saw that old guy (whom I had given such a hard time) riding down the street on an old bicycle, and I felt ashamed. I had forgotten about the human element, and besides giving him grief, I had missed my chance for a rewarding interaction with that interesting old guy.
At Himalayan Imports, the "human element" abounds, providing lots of opportunities for rewarding interactions.
