Some fixed blades by me

These are IMPRESSIVE. How does one go about learning to produce knives like these? I see that you do this as a hobby...wouldn't mind giving it a go myself. But wouldn't know where to start myself. Awesome work.

John used the term "hobby" loosely. He's put in some SERIOUS leg work in tooling up his shop, becoming a part of the knife community, and just plain learning the ins and outs of making these things.

You'll love it... just don't underestimate it! :)

Hey look Wylie... YOU'RE A ROCKSTAR!!!!!! :D

Thanks Dave ! ( You too Nick , much appreciated bud ).

Dave , yes for me it is just a hobby. However I did invest in a variable speed Bader grinder with all attachments, a couple floor mount production drill presses , 9" reversible disk grinder , 2 blast cabinets , 7 HP compressor , as well as a decent set of misc hand tools , leather working tools , etc. I have an 1140 sq ft shop out back , it's my " dust cave ". ( I also have a 7HP Index mill and a monster metal working lathe that belong to a friend in my shop , I don't know how to use them yet , but in exchange for workspace , he has agreed to teach me )

I started with a 1 x 42 and a 4 x 36 from Lowe's. Take it as far as you want , but you really don't need a whole lot to give it a shot. I recommend looking at the makers shop area here and see for yourself , the information being shared.

I bet if you looked you could find others in your area , either hobbyists, part time or full time makers who would be willing to show you some stuff.

While I may not know much , I have had a couple guys over and have shared what I learned in the time I have been making knives. I figure if I can save someone some time on their learning curve , it is time well spent.

I have met many makers , and talked with many on the phone. The only time I have had any instruction was an evening I spent with Trace Rinaldi at his shop and the night Neil Blackwood visited me at my shop ( had to feed him first though ;) ).

Everything I have learned is from talking to makers , reading the forums , watching a few DVD's. I have found the majority of makers are willing to share what they know with a newbie. Just be sure to be respectful of their time.

Jump in and give it a try , I think you will find not only a good hobby , but also a great source of friends , in both makers and collectors.

Oh yeah , and the chicks dig knife makers , ok maybe that is just for makers like Nick. :D

Those look great John. Very clean and the hand-rub looks silky! :)

Hey John,

First time I have seen your work so close. Yes, you have been paying attention. Smart to get simple and clean correct first.

I'll bet your sheaths are also impressive.

None of this surprises me, though. I, just, knew it. ;)

Works of art. I really like your style. One day when I'm back in the US I'd like to see those 'in the hand' and buy one...or two.....

Wow John,

I had know idea. Extremely well crafted. Your have a gifted talent that is clearly obvious.

So, when are you going to make some slipjoint patterns?

Anthony

Great blades, John!

Which one's Allen's?

I am guessing you are referring to Dumborat ? If so , I still have not heard from him. Sure would like to though. Miss that crazy dude.

SunnyD , I have been playing with a slipjoint and also a lockback design. Haven't complete one yet though , still trying to get everything flat and parrallel.
But those are the type of folders I plan to make since that is what appeals to me.

Thanks Coop !

John,
Oh, man ! First time I've seen your knives as well.
Tapered tangs, nicely contoured handles and excellent design work.
Keep it up.

Doug

That sounds great, John. Its going to be exiting for me to watch you flourish. Please keep us updated as things progress for you.

Best,

Anthony

That's the one, the only. Gave you his number when I found it a few years ago. Hoping all's well with him, too. He and Sara gave my daughter a Goodnight Moon book that's been well used.

Never was able to get in touch with him bud. Tried various means , phone , forum , email and IM , no response , so I just gave up.

You have some fine skills, John. Thanks for sharing!

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson
