Oldboy. This is the best Korean flick I've seen, not big on CGI, it's a top-notch suspense movie from 2003. I've heard that Speilberg is planning to do an American remake with possibly Will Smith, though it won't equal the original.
Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The Water Horse (although more of a family movie, this was a really fun film with some action as well as good effects).
The City of Violence. Another recent Korean film, more about the action. Some parts are silly, but the final showdown is fierce.
Black Belt. (Japanese title: Kuro-obi). This 2007 Japanese film is considered one of the best martial arts films of all time. The fights are realistic and it's a serious high-quality production, though little or no CGI to speak of.
Thunderball. My personal fave Bond flick.
Terminator and Terminator II: Judgment Day.
Aliens.
True Lies.
Infernal Affairs (the original Hong Kong flick that was remade in the U.S. as The Departed).
So Close. This 2002 Hong Kong action flick is one of THE best action movies, IMO, and combines CGI with awesome action, cinematography, acting, and a pretty good story, too. All three of the leading protagonists are women. A very unique film.
Dog Soldiers. This British film combines action and horror; about British soldiers on a training mission in the Scottish Highlands encountering werewolves.
Shogun Assassin. While this is a patchwork taken from some of the Lone Wolf and Cub samurai movies, it was done nicely and even has a decent English dub, and it serves as a good intro to the series and characters.
