Some good news

I just wanted to share my happiness with y'all and it is, slightly, on topic.

My wife was released from hospital on Friday night after 26 days this time. She had two abdominal surgeries and enough radiographs and MRI's that she has developed a healthy green glow that lights up the house. Now for the good part...last night she strapped on her Spyderco Moran and went for a woods walk with our daughter and me. She was only able to go about half a mile and that with a cane but she talked about wanting to go camping...something that hasn't even been a consideration for at least a couple of years.

I had to share with somebody and y'all are probably the best friends I've got.

I don't know what your entire situation is, but I am personally acquainted with someone who is, and He is on my hearts speed dial. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers, and I wish you good times and hopefully a nice camping trip in your future. And a tip of the cap for the Moran as well, nice blade.:)

Well that is good news! I hope your wife has a full and fast recovery. Woodswalking is great way to build back up her stamina too. Sounds like you have a great, strong lady!

My wife has had surgeries and has implants (no! not those kinds) that electrically stimulate her nerves to stop the chronic pain in her left leg, ankle and foot as well as her left arm. Like you, she is my best freind and we now are able to take walks in the woods of about a half mile or so. It is really nice to be able to take even short walks with her. She has also expressed camping with me some time as well. Her pain condition has been ongoing for about 9 years now. Her first implant for her arm was in 1999. Ground breaking work at the time. The pain spread to her left leg, lower back and left foot. She had another stimulator implanted in her back a month ago and that has helped so much that most of the pain medication that she has been taking for years she is reducing or eliminating.

I guess I am mentioning this because it is really nice to be able to do these things with her again and to let others know that there are people out there who are in pain, real pain 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It never stops. There are no cures but there are some new techniques that can help manage it. For that, I am very thankful. Thirty years ago they would have told my wife that she was nuts, there was nothing wrong with her and to go home.

task_force_k best of luck to you, your wife and family,

KR

Wow, thanks to everybody. I'm convinced that prayer helps.

Beckerhead, looks like we've got a friend in common. She really is fond of that Spyderco. When we win the lottery, she says she wants a real Bill Moran knife. Expensive tastes.

tknife, she get's very frustrated with inactivity. She was very active in multiple Martial Arts disciplines. She also asked, rather slyly, when she can take her new 1911 to the range...sly because she doesn't have a 1911...yet.

kr1, they've been talking about a nerve stimulator for my wife for a few months now but the surgeons have been unwilling to do it until they get some of her other issues under control, she's on anti-coagulant therapy among other things. Thanks for sharing the info, I'm glad to hear that it's effective.

There really are people out there in genuine, honest-to-goodness pain, 24/7. Some of them have a hard time of things because they are treated as drug seeking addicts by old school physicians who don't understand pharmacokinetics, opioid tolerance and the mechanisms of pain.

I'd appreciate the opportunity to ask you a few questions about the nerve stimulator off-line some time.

Thanks again, everybody.

I feel for ya buddy and glad to hear the good news. I have had a single headache for the past (almost) 7 years without and relief and yes there are a number of physicians out there that only think you are out for a quick fix (even though I don't want pharmaceuticals- I just want to know what is wrong with me).

I hope all goes even better in the future!!

I know exactly where you're coming from. I started having bizarre seizures about two years ago that have been, at various times, semi-diagnosed as Tourette's, epilepsy, PTSD, or, I swear, a reaction to a medication that I wasn't taking.

If I can go another couple of years without a diagnosis, the docs say they'll name the disease after me...so I've got that going for me, right? Which sounds better...Kehoe Disease or Kehoe Syndrome?:D

I re-read the last part about calling a patient nuts and thought that I'd share this. A "concerned" nurse claimed that one of the doctors requested a psych consult for my wife (though the doctor she claimed did it, denied it and couldn't even find a hint of it in the chart). My wife, whose degree is in psychology, agreed to see the pshrink. When the half-hour interview was up, the pshrink handed my wife her business card and said, "come see me when you get out. You could really benefit from therapy." My wife, in turn,
hands the pshrink her card and says, "Come see ME when you're ready to deal with the issues you have with your father." Is that spunky or what? Then she sent the "concerned" nurse a very nice thank you card that read, "Thank you for your concern. Next time, consider sending somebody who's competent."

Hehe sounds like you picked a winner in this woman. :D

Hoping for a speedy recovery from NY. :)

Task force K.

That is pretty standard stuff though. There are people apparently who crave attention so much that they will make stuff like this up so that they can get the attention that they are looking for. Before the insurance company antes up for that kind of money, especially if it is relatively new type of surgery, like it was on her arm. They usually want them to talk to a psycologist.

I am talking 30 years ago when they had no way to actually show that something was going on with the nerves. They would just chaulk it up to womens hormones and say that nothing was wrong. At least now they know that this happens and can actually measure the way the nerve behaves. So they know something is wrong. They still don't know why but they have treatments for it.

As far as your wifes condition I don't know where they are placing the stimulator or where her pain is. Usually, at least our doctor, always does a stim test first with an external stimulator for a couple of days to see if it is actually going to be effective. Usually this is a much less invasive procedure than the full implant.

Are you in the New Haven, CT area? Send me an email for more specifics if you want.

TFK!! I am sorry she's been suffering bro. I'll pray for you and yours. Its gotta be hard to have a kid, and be sidelined. I am glad to hear things are looking up. Keep us updated.

Thanks for the kind words.

Just for the record, I have three kids:

One lives in the UK with her mom so she can go to Cambridge.
My son is visiting his mom and her "life partner" in Texas but comes back in about a week.
My youngest daughter belongs to my wife and I.

That's right, one child per wife. Them's the rules.

"Honey, if you want more children, I'm going to have to remarry."

Hope that didn't offend anybody.

My oldest daughter is brilliant...she got that from her mother.
My son is tough and manly...he got that from his mother.
My youngest daughter is beautiful and sweet and generous and compassionate and intelligent...she got that from her mother.

Task Force K, im not good with words as many people are. But i would like to realy wish your wife and you the best. I hope from now on it would only get better for the two of you....... I say it with all my heart.
