So I'm in my kitchen last night playing with my new PE Massad Ayoob (thanks TIZWIN!) when I suddenly noticed a 6-pack of Brawny extra large paper towels on the floor. From some sort of primal Spydie sense, I automatically flicked open my C60 and stabbed into one of the towel rolls at 20% power.
"Well I'll be damned," I muttered to myself. This modest thrust had completely penetrated the length of the blade all the way to the spydie hole, piercing through the inner cardboard tube and into the other side of the roll. Paper towel rolls are pretty tough, so I was extremely impressed.
So impressed, in fact, that I decided to test the bulk of my knife collection on this "paper towel perp" setup. I placed the 6pack of Brawny on a chair, with it's back against the wall so that it wouldn't slide backward. I sat in a chair directly across from it- making for a straight-arm forward thrust. Every thrust was more or less a decent jab at 20% power, not some NIJ felon stab or anything.
I unzipped my Country Comm 'collectors bag' and got out my D2 military (sharp, but not factory fresh,) Manix (FF) mini-Manix (sharpened) Pkal (FF) ATR (FF) Cent 3 (factory re-sharpened) waved Pac salt (sharpened) 3 endura waves (1 sharpened, 1 Tom Krein, 1 factory resharpened) Benchmade nitrous Stryker (FF) Benchmade 941 (FF) and benchmade 530s (factory resharpened) and my SWAT automatic ice pick
The (highly informal) results were as follows, for 2 thrusts, from worst to best.
ATR- I love this thing, but it's penetration sucked! It penetrated about 1/16 of the length, or about a centimeter of the tip. It just dented the paper towel rolls.
SWAT Auto Spike- also terrible, this one pierced only to the first CM of the shaft, where it is recessed for locking. James Bond was rolling in his grave over this one.
Waved Pac Salt- This one was so so in performance, penetrating 1/5 the length of the blade.
Cento 3- also 1/5, despite being extremely sharp
Mini Manix- this one pierced 1/4 of the way in. Eh, fat blade.
Benchmade 530 & 913 stryker- These two were surprisingly disappointing. With their factory edges and thin, spear point blades, I assumed these were the pick of the litter. They penetrated 1/3 of the way in.
E4W-Sharpened- I got this one in a trade, with a shaving sharp, mirror polished edge, reprofiled edge. It sank 1/3 of the way in.
Tom Krein E4W- This bad boy slices like a demon, but only had moderate improvements in penetration. It pierced only marginally better than above E4W.
D2 military- this one had pierced 40%, to the point where the belly begins to swell. It would have done better if it had been factory fresh.
E4W factory resharp- Surprisingly, the factory edge was significantly more effective than the TK regrind or mirror polished reprofile. It pierced 1/2 the way in.
Manix- I was very surprised by this one. With such a fat blade I thought it would suck, but it easily pierced 2/3 of the way in. Nice.
Benchmade 941- Another big surprise, this gentlemans tactical pierced 100%
Spyderco Pkal- This one was scary. It also pierced 100%, but with half the resistance of the 941. It just sank in.
Massad Ayoob PE- while not quite as effortless as the Pkal, it pierced the deepest, passing through the cardboard tube and through the next side.
I hope you found this to be mildly informative. It is by no means a definitive, scientific test, at all, nor should it be treated as such. This was just a little test drive to get a feel for my collection.
