Here are pics I snapped of some small "good stuff to have" kits. Just some brainfood to use if you plan on making a kit to..

Here are the kits I've compiled;

Here is my main Altoids kit I keep on me;

The plastic vial on the upper right in this next one has a needle and thread, along with some swivels and fishhooks. The mini bic (with duct tape around it) is pretty big in relation to this kind of kit, but instant flame is worth it IMO. I could ditch the bic and add more fishing stuff (like that tiny bread like bait), but I think the Bic is worth the space.

Here's a small sewing kit I keep in my bag. I definately need to expand on the contents of this one;

Bonus points to anyone who recognizes where the needles and pins came from..

These scissors were offered on Countycomm.com a little while ago and are a perfect fit for a Altoids tin.

This kit is a little larger than my Altoids. I keep this one in my bag, although it could fit in the pocket of a coat. It's all in a small Aloxsak.

Here's the small FAK that's inside;

This next one is juat a small FAK I keep in my jacket/shirt pocket. I need to add some more medication to it aside from light wound care, but I still want to keep it somewhat slim. It's a companion to the Altoids kit I carry which has VERY minimal FAK stuff.

Great kits.
I've learned a lot about good PSK construction from this forum.

Nice Kits man,

I'll be looking those over a bit. Good stuff and thanks for sharing. How do you carry those by teh way?

God bless,
Adam

OK, are we going to handle this like frequent flier miles or do I get a gift card at China-Mart or something? :D

They're from a military fishing kit. Maybe from Tra-Con or other manufacturers going back to mid-Vietnam era. You, being a sneaky devil who reads probably got that from the larger USMC Force Recon Survival Kit which contained a Tra-Con or other vendor's identical fishing kit which had the sewing gear in it. :D

The Altoids kit fits perfetly in the cellphone sized pockets on either leg of my Blackhawk pants, or any cargo pocket actually, but I don't like having hard items near my knees in those big cargo pockets. The sewing kit stays in my bag alongside the larger Aloxsak kit.

@cpmorgan, Don beat you by three minutes! But yes you're both right, The pins and needles are from a USMC fishing kit from the early 1990's. I found one of the USMC survival kits on ebay a while back and snagged it for about $70, and that fishing kit (and the nice big tin it comes in) was part of it. It's from Tra-Con out of Beverly MA, and the tin is made in Germany. The larger needles are pretty useless since I don't have any heavy thread in my sewing kit, but that's one of the things I need to get.

The bonus points are redeemable for one handshake, and have no monetary value:D

The eye of those needles are large enough to use the inner strands from ParaCord! So, you, of all people, should have some thread for them. :D

The red and yellow flannel was for attaching to the large spoon (lures) in the kit. You can soak them in fish gut juice and that's the purpose for them as well.

I go to crafts stores and by the waxed nylon thread for use in awls and have some Singer Carpet and Upholstery thread as well, for use in kits.

You can tell if your kit is old by the type of fishing line, too. The older ones use the better braided nylon fishing line. The newer ones, probably after 1985, use monofilament line.

If I have to be beaten I am glad it was him. His website is the one that really showcased the sewing kit portion of the kit. I knew that stuff was in there, but Don really brought it into focus. His website is very good. :thumbup:

How do you think I came to know about the USMC survival kit in the first place?;)

DH1, how do you like that tiny folding saw?

I have a couple or the razors from teh same company and like them...
Was considering getting a few saws...

It's a quality saw, but it's obviosly limited because of the small size. It would be good for improvising/repairing stuff out of plastic, vinyl, wood/bone (trap making), and light metal like soda cans. A good companion to the folding razor I think.

cool thanks.

really nice kits btw.

the folding saw is also a good ferro rod striker(leave saw folded ,using spine)

You can use the end of the of the razor blades for that too, not the edge or spine, but the flat tip.

Dermashave razors have also been around since Vietnam. As of the last few years, Dermashave or whoever has been making those saws. I wish they would make one with a metal file in it. Then you would have a great tool that could also be used with magnesium bars, too.

Thanks guys. :)

I am thinking about closing my blog and transferring what I want to article versions or putting a blog on the website, I don't know what to do with that.

Many people in here, Tony and Mistwalker being two - and you, "DH1," could start your own websites as well. It's only about twice as difficult as posting the threads you do in here with pictures.

When I dig out from a few problems I am currently having, I might recruit a few people in here to submit their kits and then whip them into article form and put them up there on the website. Sort of like a potpourri of what people can come up with because everyone has their own twist and their own idea of what is essential or snivel gear or whatever else they come up with.

Even the idea of what constitutes "snivel" gear can be a debate in some circles. Some people think Imodium is "snivel" gear, I guess they've never had the rooty-too-scoots in the woods, it sucks, to say the least.

Awesome kits!!! Where do you get your components?

It seems that when Don posts to a thread, Google searches go through the roof for the item he mentions. :D:thumbup::D

Lots of places...bestglide.com has lots of good stuff..countycomm.com as well. Some stuff is taken from other kits like the USMC survival kit I mentioned, as well as the mag/ferro rod and whistle from the Izula kit, some components from the RAT survival kit I was fortunate enough to win a while ago.

Once you compile so much stuff, you can really sift through things based on size, uses, quality and put together all kinds of kits.
