I've been playing with my camera, trying to get the exposure right, so I took a few photos of some knives.

Broke BRKT North Star! Yep, as I was carrying it out for the photos, it slid out of the sheath and landed right on the lanyard, which of course snapped off. Guess I need to get ahold of Mike Stewart and see if he can take care of removing the rest of it. :(

Man that sucks, I dropped my D2 Ka-Bar down some rocks and that never chipped or anything and D2 is touted as being brittle so I find it strange your BRKT blade should break so easy ?
I'd speak to them ASAP and I'd think they would give you a new one !!!

Great pics by the way !!!!

How far did it fall and what did it land on!? I'm quite surprised to see the lanyard loop just break off like that.

Nice pictures.

:(That broken lanyard loop is spooky, Mike will take care of it, but jeeeeze:(

That shouldn't have snapped like that. It may be indicative of an overall HT problem on that knife. I'd send it in for replacement.

Longbow,

Sorry about the Barkie... I really like that Becker of your, good looking grips!

Thanks guys.... Needless to say, I was very surprised that it broke off like that. The first thing that I thought of was heat treat, but I've got no experience in that kind of stuff, so we will see.

I just finished packaging it up with a note to Mike, explaining what happened and I stapled the small piece of lanyard (in small plastic bag) to the note. Sure would be nice to get a new one, that's for sure, but whatever Mike thinks is best is OK with me. I'm sure that he will be fair about it all.

great pics LB.. i actually wouldn't mind if i had the lanyard loop removed from my NS...:o

When I first received the knife, I thought the lanyard would get in the way a lot, but it never really bothered me all that much.

A little info from the Crucible site regarding tool steels like A2.

There are several other factors beside inherent material properties which often contribute to chipping or breakage failures. Tool steels are notch-sensitive materials. The presence of notches, undercuts, sharp radii, changes in section, or any geometric features may concentrate applied stress and exaggerate the material’s tendency to break. All reasonable precautions to avoid unnecessarily sharp radii should be exercised.

I'd kindly drop mine if I knew it would snap off cleanly. I might send it in just so they could make it smooth :D

Sorry to hear that Longbow, but you know, it kindly looks wicked with those claws sticking out there! If Mike doesn't send out a whole new Northstar, ask him to file off the lower and put an edge on the top one! Excellent photos!

See how well it makes sparks from a ferro rod? :D
I have a nebula on the way and I was a bit worried it would not take abuse, they just look so nice! Your pics are not helping, but I think it will work out ok.

It was totally an accident, honest.:D

StretchNM, If I remember correctly, Mike was grinding the lanyard off of the knife if people wanted him to. Contact him and find out if he'll do it for you.

Actually, I didn't post it to make BRKT look bad. It's been a great knife other than this one little thing. Mike's service is top notch, so I wouldn't be affraid of buying another of his knives and the Bravo-1 comes to mind right off. :D Just got too many other irons in the fire to put out that kind of cash for awhile.

Liam, don;t worry about your knife. Barkies are nothing but tough, well-made knives! I think Ilbruche's Crucible post might be the key to what happened. A Nebula or Aurora is on my wish list! By the way, Longbow, a Canadian Camp knife just came in. It makes my Bravo-1 look like a pro scalpel!!!!!

Mike will surely take care of it, but I am surprised that happened!

Can't wait to see the new Becker line..
