I got me a new knife :)
I havent had a new toy for months , well not counting my truck or the van , or the other van ...
anyway , here it is , just a svord peasant .

Ive used it as my edc for a week , give or take a bit , its good . the sticky out bit can be a pain getting in and out of vehicles , but that is the only time I found it to be in the way .

THe knife is easy on the eye , the pocket , and its a good one to use . Its only a slip joint but it kinda binds open , and takes some reasonable force to unbind to shut it . I dont see this as a bad thing . I can open it one handed , took nearly 5 mins of messing with it to get it down pat , tho closing it one handed isnt going to happen due to the binding open .

Used it for shaving tinder , fuzz sticks , general kitchen duty , some whittling but I dont like being out too long wasting time in the cold and the Mrs dont like me dropping shavings on the floor inside so I didnt do too much . Still , its a capable knife , Im happy to carry it .

I also found in Kmart , this little water bottle for a whole $11
The activated carbon filter was interesting to me .

The filter is replaceable , there are spares at Kmart .. I spent $11 buying this to check it out , Im going to buy a fair few more tho .
The paper with it says the filter is good for 2 - 3 months or regular use , I spose that is about a refill or two a day , using tap water .
Looked like value to me , My mum is testing it out at the moment , she trips around a lot with her friends , and has a few times gotten sick with gastro bugs she blames on the water she drank . So far , she is happy , no issues after a weeks use . No stomach bugs despite going tot he places she thinks she picked them up before

I really like that Svord folder...very traditional looking:thumbup:

What are the spec's on that water bottle? Not a bad price even if best used with clear water. That would be a good addition to any urban travel gear and even a short term get-home-bag. Keep us updated on how it performs...thanks for the heads up,

ROCK6

The water bottle holds about a litre give or take .. the bottle itself is soft , designed I think that you can squeeze it to help the warer thru the filter , dunno for sure .
Im going to get more next week , Ill keep the label and instrucion book and be able to have more info then .

I kinda regularly check thru the water filter section of the supermarkets looking for this kind of buy .. we have issues with sewage in the water near every year during floods , and just the tap water .. its disgusting any time of year . I worked with a watercorp guy who flat out refused to drink the stuff and had a serious filter system set up for his general use water ... he was the guy who had to pull the dead dogs out of the main tanks ... anyway it makes me really interested in stuff like this , especially when it is in my budget range

Wal-Mart sells a similar bottle that I was excited about, until I read the label on the package. All the one at Wal-Mart really does is remove bad tastes from the water with a charcoal filter. I'd imagine that it would prevent you from drinking dirt or other debris in the water too.. It doesn't do anything for parasites or viruses at all though.

Im hoping that running water thru a charcoal filter will pick up a few of the nasties that we otherwise drink out of our taps here . For $11 I doubt its going to be a filter rated at picking up virus sized stuff , but if itll grab a few bacteria and maybe soak up some of the chemical load inthe water , Im happy with that , its better than most people got around here .

The Peasant Knives with the polypropylene scales are a little less traditional looking, but are a bit smoother in operation. Tension from the scales still grips the blade nicely, but there isn't that same "stickiness" you get with the wood. I can one-handed close the poly ones without having to press the spine against my leg. Not so with the wood ones, like you said. It's especially nontraditional, but I quite like the look of the blue one myself. :)

I got a pink plastic handled peasant for my wife , it does open and close smoother , with a consistent drag the whole way round the blade swing , compared to the wood that has on mine at least , drag to hold it shut , and drag to hold it open , with no drag anywhere between the two positions .

I used my wooden handled one kinda hard today . Making kindling and tinder out of a redgum log Id usually not attempt .. but the frost this morning was motivation to try . Used the svord to fit a cd player to the " new" car ( new to me , but a 89 model ..still one of the newest I ever owned tho ) it cut all the plastics to fit up the speakers , and a few other things Id usualy use a heavier knife for around the yard and out getting firewood ..

Result was it lost the factory edge ... no issue , it now sports a new even sharper one . But the serious locking into the handle that it had , it no longer has .. it still has some grab , but not the serious grip it did have .

Im still loving the knife tho , no complaints , I set out to see what it took to lose the factory edge ... it actually took a fair effort , it was easy as to put it back to sharp tho , so thats all good .

I probably wont ever use it as hard as that again ever .
I think this is actually a bit better than an opinel as far , apart from it wont ever be as cool when it wears in, to just flick open and shut .. but where I have rolled the edge on my opinel and had to peen it back into shape, the svord is a lot more robustly made , and just keeps on cutting .

The water bottle , I went to town and hassled a girl in BigW , they do have them in there . They are designed for using with municipal supplies only .
At first I thought aww dam that sucks

Then I did some thinking , our town supply comes from the river that runs thru a fair number of feedlot properties , horse studs , dairies , and places that add to its content creatively like our local tannery with chromium and stuff ... it gets filtered , dosed with fluoride and chlorine and is sent to our taps . We get enough grit thru our pipes we have to change the tap washers every 6 months , and the water heater has enough sediment build up in it that the outlet pipe blocks every 12 months with chalky grey buildup .

I buy bottled water , we cook with it , drink it , we wash in town water , now and then the kids come out with huge red blotches on them from the shower tho .. We boil town water in the electric kettle usually , we go thru kettles regularly tho . Boiling seems to remove a fair amount of the odor , and the sediment that builds up indicates that a fair amount of other crap is removed as well .

this is municipal water , and the bottle I bought is designed to deal with it.

Anyway , I filled one up , and tried it out .

It does indeed remove about 90+% the smell , and the chemical taste . That is not too shabby ... I have friends who have installed filter systems into their homes that incorporate a charcoal filter , that do not do as good in that respect .

Filling the bottle and squirting the water into a glass , it looks clear , it comes out of the tap looking kind of milky . Big improvement .

I generally get a headache after drinking even a glass of tap water from home here , but using the bottle , its not an issue . I dunno what gives me the headache , I blame whatever is causing the chemical smell and taste in the water .. the filter removes the smell and the taste and I dont get the headache .. whatever , Im happy with it .

I dont know if it will remove viri and bacteria , it is a charcoal filter .. it is fine enough that you have to exert some effort to suck water thru it . There is a problem getting the last inch of water out of the bottle .. the way the filter is , its just going to be that way .

I think , for $11 , its not a bad thing to have , the next closest thing to it I know of is the lifestraw , that sells for around $26 . I havent tried that tho .

OK not a scientific analysis , but Im not a scientist :P But to sum up , the filter in this bottle does as it says it does , it removed smell and taste from water .. it also removes fine sediment .. enough to make cloudy water come out clear .. but to what level of particulate I dont know ... not much more to say about it . I am carrying one tho now :)

Holy crap--your water sounds awful! While I run a web store, my day job is MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) environmental compliance (basically dealing with storm water runoff systems management--I'm not the grunt work guy, but a systems management tech.) and I can tell you that the stuff that goes right into rivers through storm water basins is downright awful. Corrosive opaque gray water. :barf: Now that's all separate from the sewer system, which is what goes through sewage treatment plants. Sounds like you guys need some water quality infrastructure upgrades!

The water is bad .. but I been worse places .

When it looks like flooding now , we get ready to move out a while , the need to boil water because the sewerage ponds are overflowing again is kinda annoying . I dont mind sharing .. but there are somethings you really dont want to share .

I tried your webstore , my email server wont talk to yours tho , dunno why .needs an international order button there or something .

It seems as though not enough attention or budget is given to water quality and infrastructure. Not sure why, since it's a vital resource!

If you'd like to place an international order just send me an email either at fortytwoblades@gmail.com or at sales@baryonyxknife.com
Clicking on the international order image on the main page should link to the business email. If that doesn't work shoot me a pm and we'll work it out. :)
