Here is some new stuff, what do you think? They are not really compleated yet, sorry for the crappy pictures, scratches, poor lighting, etc. I'll get some better ones tommorrow in the daylight. First up is an forged A2 bowie, still needs some polish work and a leather chord wrap handle. Next is a few knives from some of Mace and Aldo's 1084, that one has a nice hamon my polish just sucks for now. Both knives are done except for a better polish and a handle wrap on the odd shaped one(with the hamon). I REALLY love the 1084, hardens up really nice and seems to be super tough and springy, i have 3 peices of the 1 1/2 inch i will save until i am better. Enjoy, i'll have some shots up again as they get finished.

Ummm, a garage door would be my guess...

Sam, you never cease to amaze me. All I've made since Ashokan is one peice of scrap.

Sam, stop, you're killing me! I so need to get my butt down to the shop. Those are so sweet!!! Great job!

Thanks guys! HMMMM Joe, what ever could we use THOSE for? I have just come up with a new idea for an even SIMPLER foot powered power hammer based off an old design known as an oliver hammer, maybe a little help to draw out those billets:D? I'll have to build one when i get the chance and steel to see how it works first.

Mitch YEAH IT DID! I will be putting it through it's paces on my next day off, and maybe giving it to some hunters i know who can do that kind of testing with it too.

Dan, KEEP AT IT. i forge ALOT, and my day job is a welding shop where i get to do all kinds of metalworky things all day long, welding bending grinding(if only on gates fences and railings and stuff). I also rent a space in the same building as my own shop, so afterwork or whatever i can hang out and work in my own shop everyday! All kinds of goodies to play about with. And i don;t even have the new forge running yet. Maybe next year at Ashokan we can put in some hammer time.

Thanks Erik, NOW GET OUT TO THE SHOP! ;)

Nice work Sam. I really like the 3rd knife down, makes me want to hold it my teeth and climb the rigging:D

Don't you know how to make a straight handle ?? [a pet peeve of mine ]

Sam,

That bowie blade is awesome...I really think it deserves more than just a cordwrap.

Great work man, can't wait to see more.

Wow, i love these! whats the thickness on those and the thickness of the handles, they look beefy. very cool blades.

also, iv been job hunting lately, i really want to work in a welding shop, im trying to hit every one in town. any tips on what they would want to see in me when i apply?

As to the thicknesses, the two small blades are 1/4 thick on the spine. The Bowie is 5/16ths at the thickest(the hammer finish parts is the thickest) with the handle being just a bit less that 5/16ths where it has not been contour ground on the edges. The handles on the others are pretty thick, they got a bit upset when i was forging them. I would have to get out the calipers to measure the gladius that puppy is thin.
As to the job hunt. Brign a portfolio or some pictures of work you have done. be proficient in atleast one form of welding MIG TIG STICK ARC, they usually want someone how knows how to weld in atleast some form or another, not too sure of too many willing to train. be kind friendly and ON TIME most of all. Make sure you can make nice clean consistent strong welds too. I do MIG all day and was kinda rough at the start of the job as it had been awhile, but now it's like laying putty.

Thanks for the comments guys! Deker, i would go with something better like slabs and bolsters but it has already been HT'd, and i lack the proper equipment to anneal A2 for drilling. Thanks Mace, after watching you forge those nice upset finger notches at Ashokan i was dying to try a few, your way is much easier.

LK Smithy, and hope you don't get a welder qualifier like me !! I used to qualify nuclear welders [totally perfect welds !!!] ....Welding machines make it much easier today. For general welding you do need to demonstrate ability to make sound welds of various kinds. Without knowing you're background it's hard to add to that except have a good attitude.

A friend of mine(machinist) you might know Robert used to do nuclear pipe welding. Said they had a test every morning you had to pass before yor shift started. He has all kinds of QC stories.

Dan, i think Joe meant to use the garage door springs for one of these:
