Some of My Latest Work...

Okay, I am a learner so excuse my dumb question here. What makes a knife a bird and trout knife? I thought that they were a bit shorter, not quite as tall or thick blade for dealing with cutting finer game. I thought they tended to have more of a point and less of a belly that a skinner. You said these were 7". A 7" blade, or overall length including the handle?
Maybe I just have the wrong idea for a bird and trout knife.

Also, very nice knives. I really like the look of your hamons.

Good to see you posting new stuff, Nic.

You know, a LOT of new makers come through here (he says like he's been here forever...). They all ask for advice. But few new makers have LISTENED as carefully as you have, and it shows. You have made very steady and significant improvements since you began. Your leather work still needs a little help but even that has improved tremendously. Your knife designs are handsome, practical and well executed. Your attention to detail, symmetry and fit is very good. Kudos to you for showing the interest and dedication.

My goodness. I went back through N Nic. early posts and I see where this high praise comes from. I can only hope.

Got it, I’ll give that a try on my next sheath.
Thank you!

Good deal. Was off getting a new stitcher myself yesterday. got the big Cobra 4. It goes to work today. I already set it at 6 to the inch.

Hi Randy- I guess I do not really have an exact or educated answer for you. When I designed this knife, I wanted something that would be a good small game processer. Something thin and flexible, and also small and not in the way. So I designed something with the characteristics you mentioned; kinda short, not very wide, and thin. Something to get into small areas with rather than dealing with covering a large surface area like skinning. I use 3/32” 15n20 so there is some- but not very much- flex to the blade. It is 7” overall.
Someone might have a formal definition of what a Bird and Trout knife is- but that’s simply what I call it because of its purpose:).

Well your a lot fancier than I am- I still saddle stitch by hand! Maybe I need to train the dog how to stitch for me...
Then again, you do a lot more leather work than I do!

When I read "7" I thought that was the length of the blade....pretty big blade! Seven inches overall makes much more sense to me.

That would be huge! I’ve never made a knife with a 7” Blade, I’ll have to be more specific next time.

6 holsters (5 tooled), 2 rifle scabbards (both tooled, one with acres and acres of basketstamping) and a belt. Thats for today. Oh and gonna split some wood too.
